Chapter 12

“William Carter, listen carefully to what I'm about to say.” Emily Thompson interrupted him as if she hadn't heard a word William Carter said. Her tone was grave, as if she was about to reveal something extremely serious.

“You might find this hard to believe, but the end of the world is coming soon—maybe within the next few days. I only found out today. The car is waiting outside right now, and I have to leave immediately. Make sure you keep yourself safe first, then head to the Shenbei highway entrance—the military is stationed there. Once you arrive, they should take you to the Shenhai Safe Island!” Emily Thompson lowered her voice and spoke very quickly.

“Remember, you must get to the highway entrance today. The military is there, and they’ll protect civilians during the evacuation…”

At that moment, an urgent voice called out from the other end of the phone. Emily Thompson could only say hurriedly, “William Carter, you have to remember, I’m not joking!”

Then, Emily Thompson hung up. All that was left in the receiver was a rapid busy tone, and then silence.

William Carter held his phone, not lowering his arm for a while. As expected, the evacuation had already begun. Shenhai Safe Island—he had no idea what kind of place that was…

William Carter felt a bit grateful for what Emily Thompson had done. She probably called because she remembered he was supposed to visit her today. She was still as kind as ever.

But… even if Emily Thompson was taken away, it didn’t mean she was truly safe.

William Carter knew the virus had already spread. Humanity’s scientists probably only realized its existence after the outbreak had already begun.

The incubation period of this super virus wasn’t long. In that extremely short time, scientists managed to make a few discoveries, deduced the coming apocalypse, and then spent even more time on further research.

By the time those in power learned that the apocalypse was likely to break out, the time they had to prepare was pitifully short.

In this situation, it was impossible to save all of humanity. The only thing they could do was preserve the elite.

All over the world, “Safe Islands” were being established to ensure the continuation of the human race. But… before getting onto a Safe Island, there would inevitably be a round of cleansing and quarantine.

Perhaps even now, the scientists themselves could hardly believe the conclusions they’d reached, so the major governments still didn’t dare to take the most inhumane, extreme measures.

But once they truly witnessed the brutality of the apocalypse and the terror of this super virus, the methods they’d use would become unimaginably bloody!

While William Carter was on the phone with Emily Thompson, the two movers who had been paid were squatting not far away, smoking and resting, occasionally glancing at William Carter’s minibus and chatting.

“This vehicle, this interior—damn, it’s off the charts!”

“Rich people’s stuff is just different. If you took a few beauties on a world tour in this, that’d be the life.”

The two moving guys smacked their lips, already fantasizing about driving this RV, taking beautiful women on trips everywhere. Sightseeing by day, having fun at night, a kitchen when hungry, a bathroom when dirty, even a double bath—what’s not to love?

But in the midst of these fantasies, one of the movers suddenly felt dizzy, an abnormal flush appearing on his face, and he nearly collapsed.

“Hey, man, what’s wrong?”

The other immediately came over to help.

“I’m fine.” The guy brushed off his friend’s hand and quickly recovered. “What could be wrong? You know how tough I am.”

As he spoke, he pounded his chest twice, which was solid muscle.

“Hahaha! I bet you overdid it last night, and now you’re daydreaming about girls—no wonder you’re feeling weak!”

The two started joking around, dirty jokes flying everywhere.

But not far away, William Carter watched the scene in silence. He didn’t feel like laughing at all; instead, a chill slowly crept up his back.

He knew this kind of fainting was just the prelude to the virus’s onset.

The end of the world was probably less than an hour away!

That mover, still chatting as if nothing had happened, while William Carter sat in the vehicle watching them, his gaze growing colder.

In this situation, there was nothing he could do. He couldn’t bring himself to run them over, and if he did, it would immediately cause chaos. Not knowing the exact time the apocalypse would break out, doing so would put himself in extreme danger.

Not just William Carter—even the government couldn’t do anything. In just an hour or two, the world was destined to plunge into catastrophe.

The two movers, with no work for now, sat under the shade of a tree, smoking.

William Carter checked the time. It was 1:20 p.m. He waited in silence.

When the apocalypse broke out, everyone in the world would experience a strong immune reaction, including William Carter himself, because they had all been infected.

The difference was, after the immune reaction, some people would resist the virus, while others would be turned into monsters.
