William Carter didn’t think too much about it. What others thought had nothing to do with him. He just wanted to get a good score in the real high school entrance exam, get into a prestigious university, then play games well, muddle through until graduation, and find a job that could get him in touch with the dimensional field.
However, there was one thing that bothered William Carter a little. He had never really thought about being defeated by Jane Anderson before, but after Grace Bennett brought it up, he also felt something was off.
Jane Anderson was about the same age as him, maybe even younger, yet she was very likely already a legendary-level powerhouse. Although it was just a difference of one level, there was a world of difference between the Mortal stage and the Legendary stage. It was almost impossible for someone at the Mortal stage to defeat a Legendary-level powerhouse.
The most obvious sign was that only Legendary-level powerhouses had a chance to obtain a companion pet, while it was very difficult for those at the Mortal stage to get one. Even if they got a companion egg, they wouldn’t have enough vital energy to hatch it.
There were also many invisible, hidden gaps. For example, after a human advanced to the Legendary stage, they would awaken a legendary fate, which greatly enhanced their physical abilities and further widened the gap between the Mortal and Legendary stages.
Unless there was some compelling reason, most Legendary-level powerhouses wouldn’t bother to make a move against someone at the Mortal stage. Yet Jane Anderson had actively challenged him, a Mortal-level student, and not long after the challenge, she transferred to another school and left. No matter how you looked at it, it seemed like she had come specifically to beat him up.
“I’ve never left Guide Prefecture since I was born. How could I have offended someone like that? Could it be Dad…” William Carter thought about it over and over, and it seemed like that was the only possibility.
William Carter’s mother died in childbirth, so he grew up in a single-parent family, and his dad was extremely unreliable.
William Carter’s dad was named Edward Carter, and just like his name, he was a man as free as the wind. From the age of five, William Carter learned to be alone, could cook simple meals, do laundry, handle housework, and go to the supermarket to buy things.
His unreliable dad claimed this was to cultivate his survival skills as a man from a young age, which would be his asset for finding a wife in the future.
Although his unreliable dad was very lazy, the one thing that comforted William Carter was that Edward Carter never shorted him on living expenses.
Edward Carter worked as a translator and was fluent in multiple languages. When William Carter was little, he often took on translation work at home, but as technology advanced and translation software became more powerful, Edward Carter’s work gradually decreased.
Later, as William Carter grew older and became more independent, Edward Carter started taking on on-site translation jobs, often traveling for work. Sometimes he’d be gone for about a week, sometimes for two or three months at a time.
This time was even more outrageous—William Carter hadn’t seen him for half a year. If it weren’t for the fact that he transferred living expenses to William Carter’s account on time every month, William Carter would have worried that he’d died somewhere out there.
Because Edward Carter sometimes went to rather remote areas where communication was terrible, it was common for his phone to be unreachable. William Carter had already gotten used to it.
Even if he wasn’t used to it, there was nothing he could do. Other than waiting for Edward Carter to come back, there was nothing else he could do.
It was just the two of them at home. William Carter had no chance to offend someone like Jane Anderson, so he strongly suspected that it was his dad, Edward Carter, who had offended someone, and when they couldn’t find Edward Carter, they took it out on his son instead.
As for his dad’s character, William Carter had no confidence at all. He was greedy, loved to play, indulged in food, drink, and entertainment, and often hung out in places like bars. In the past, after flirting with girls, he’d often get chased and beaten up by their boyfriends.
If it weren’t for William Carter’s own strong survival skills, he really doubted whether Edward Carter could have raised him to adulthood.
As he was thinking, he suddenly heard his phone ring, startling the absent-minded William Carter. He pulled out his regular phone and saw that it was actually his dad, Edward Carter, calling.
“Speak of the devil.” William Carter quickly answered the call. He was just about to say something when he heard Edward Carter’s voice from the phone: “Son, I’m getting married. Do you want to come to my wedding?”
Good thing William Carter wasn’t drinking water, or he would have spit it all out.
“You’re getting married? Who are you marrying?” William Carter didn’t mind Edward Carter remarrying. After all, Edward Carter had been single for so many years, and it was normal to find a partner. Maybe after getting married, he wouldn’t be so unreliable anymore. It might even be a good thing.
“I’ll send you a photo of my sweetheart.” Edward Carter said, and before William Carter could say anything, he hung up and sent over a photo.
William Carter glanced at the photo on his phone and saw it was a picture of Edward Carter with a woman who looked to be at most in her thirties. She was elegant and beautiful, with a remarkable temperament. Unlike those so-called beauties online, this woman had an intellectual beauty and an indescribable unique aura.
“So, what do you think? The new mom I found for you isn’t bad, right? Her name is Charlotte Cooper.” Edward Carter called again, sounding very pleased with himself.
“Not bad, but she’s not my mom,” William Carter replied.
