Chapter 16

“The game graphics are really unreliable. Such a brutal killing machine actually looks so cute and chibi in the game.” William Carter flipped over and mounted the back of the mutated mighty ant, making it circle around the living room twice.

Unfortunately, the living room was too small, and even turning around was difficult for the mutated mighty ant, so there really wasn’t much thrill.

“I’ll try riding it outside when I get the chance.” Unless necessary, William Carter didn’t plan to let anyone know about the existence of the mutated mighty ant.

Although a mortal-level companion pet is rare, it’s still much weaker compared to a legendary-level companion pet, so there’s not much point in showing off.

However, after getting a companion egg, William Carter became even more motivated, continuing to work hard on his phone, wanting to see what other good things could drop from the ant nest.

With the college entrance exam approaching, William Carter started school early, hoping to get to class and catch some sleep. As soon as he arrived at the school gate, he saw Robert Harris standing there with a strange expression.

When he saw William Carter approaching, Robert Harris quickly walked over, his face looking a bit odd. He bit his lip and said to William Carter, “William Carter, I’m sorry. My friend invited me to join his team, so I can’t team up with you anymore.”

After saying that, without waiting for William Carter to respond, Robert Harris turned and ran off.

William Carter was slightly stunned, not knowing what was going on with this guy. The college entrance exam was almost here, and he actually wanted to switch teams.

“Robert Harris quit the team. I wonder if Grace Bennett has any backup plans. At this point, it’s probably hard to find new teammates.” William Carter thought as he walked into the school, and saw David Thompson standing in front of him, though he didn’t know when he’d gotten there.

“David Thompson, did you know that Robert Harris is quitting the team?” William Carter asked.

David Thompson was slightly stunned, looking at William Carter with a strange expression. “I’m sorry. For some reasons, I can’t participate in the practical test with you either.”

Looking at David Thompson, William Carter felt a bad premonition rising in his heart.

“Why?” William Carter asked, looking at David Thompson.

“Don’t ask. Anyway, I’m sorry.” David Thompson looked ashamed, bowed to William Carter, and then quickly left.

When William Carter saw Grace Bennett, he could tell something from her expression, which made him even more certain of his guess.

“I’m sorry, William Carter. I can’t participate in the practical test with you.” Grace Bennett walked up to William Carter, remained silent for a long time, and finally spoke.

Chapter 12: The Power of a Single Sentence

“Why?” William Carter asked, gazing into Grace Bennett’s eyes.

Grace Bennett avoided his gaze, not daring to meet William Carter’s eyes. She shook her head slightly and said, “Don’t ask. Anyway, I’m sorry.”

William Carter smiled faintly, reached out and placed his hand on Grace Bennett’s head, ruffling her hair as he said, “I should be the one apologizing. Someone wants to deal with me, so you, Robert Harris, and David Thompson got dragged into this. While there’s still time, go find another teammate. You have to get a good score, or I’ll feel uneasy. Also, help me apologize to Robert Harris and David Thompson.”

Grace Bennett stared blankly at William Carter, her expression complicated—shock, guilt, confusion, and a hint of some other emotion.

“All right, go on. I need to work harder too.” William Carter withdrew his hand, smiled, and turned to leave.

Grace Bennett stood there watching William Carter’s back. After he had walked several steps away, she spoke in a slightly trembling voice, “William Carter, I don’t know who you’ve offended, but that person’s power is terrifying. You need to be careful.”

William Carter didn’t say anything. He just turned back and smiled at her, then continued walking away quickly.

William Carter knew he didn’t have much time left. David Thompson’s family background was fairly ordinary, but Robert Harris’s family was quite prominent in Guide Prefecture, and Grace Bennett’s background was even better. There were already rumors at school that her father was a high-ranking city official, and a powerful one at that.

To be able to influence all three of them at once, that person’s power must be extraordinary.

William Carter couldn’t figure out when he had offended such a person, but thinking back to An Jing’s transfer and their duel, there were at least some clues.

Finding a secluded spot, William Carter picked up his phone, wanting to ask his dad if he had offended anyone.

But the phone only gave a “powered off” message. Who knows what Edward Carter was doing, with his phone off in broad daylight.

Hanging up, William Carter pondered what he should do next.

“The most important thing right now is to find three students willing to team up with me for the practical test.” William Carter frowned in thought.

The practical test was different from other subjects in the college entrance exam. Because it took place in a dimensional field, even though it was a domain already controlled by humans and not too dangerous, there were still quite a few casualties every year. That’s why the practical test was voluntary and allowed free team formation.

William Carter didn’t know why the federal government chose this kind of testing method. Every year, when there were casualties in the practical test, the federal government would face massive public criticism, yet the practical test continued year after year, with no sign of change.
