Chapter 17

William Carter doesn't mind danger. With his current strength, even if he goes alone to participate in the practical test, he can still achieve a pretty good result.

However, the federal government requires that four students from the same school must participate together in order to register, so before the registration deadline for the practical test, he must find three other students willing to form a team with him.

“There are only a few days left before the college entrance exam. The students willing to participate in the practical test probably already have their own teams. Who can I still find to team up with at this point?” William Carter felt a bit troubled.

Originally, he just wanted to get into a prestigious university, find a stable job, and quietly play games in the future. But someone didn’t want to let him be at peace and insisted on stirring up trouble.

“William Carter, come with me for a moment.” As soon as William Carter reached the classroom door, he was stopped by James White.

James White looked a bit upset. He took William Carter back to his office, locked the door, and then looked at William Carter with a serious expression and asked, “William Carter, do you know General Anderson?”

“Who is that?” William Carter asked in confusion.

“General Anderson is an honorific title with an official rank. His real name is Matthew Anderson. Are you sure you don’t know him?” James White stared at William Carter and asked again.

“I don’t know him.” William Carter shook his head firmly.

Seeing that William Carter didn’t seem to be lying, James White looked puzzled. “That’s strange. If you don’t know General Anderson, why did he single you out for criticism—a high school student—when he came to inspect Guidefu?”

“So who exactly is Matthew Anderson?” William Carter now more or less understood that the withdrawal of Emily Bennett and the other two was probably related to this Matthew Anderson.

James White gave a wry smile and said, “I’m just a teacher, I don’t have access to people like that. I only heard the principal mention him. The Earth Federation is divided into four regions: east, south, west, and north. Guidefu is just a small city in the eastern region. Although General Anderson Matthew Anderson is very young, he comes from a prestigious family. He’s only in his twenties but already holds a high position, a senior officer in the eastern region’s military, with real power in his hands. He’s quite an impressive figure.”

“Mr. White, are you saying that Matthew Anderson is targeting me?” William Carter frowned.

“Maybe he’s not targeting you specifically, but if he says something bad about you, those who want to curry favor with General Anderson will do much more than just talk.” James White said helplessly.

“For someone in such a high position, does he really not know that a single word from him could ruin a high school student’s future?” William Carter said coldly. “Could this General Anderson have something to do with Jane Anderson?”

“It seems there is some connection, but I’m not sure exactly what.” James White thought for a moment and said, “We can figure that out later. Right now, the most important thing is that you must find a team to register for the practical test. The day after tomorrow is the registration deadline. If you wait any longer, it’ll be too late.”

William Carter also said helplessly, “At this point, the students who wanted to participate in the practical test should already have their teams. Where can I find people now? Besides, even if I do find them, if they could break up the team once, couldn’t they do it a second time?”

“That’s why the teammates you find this time can’t be ordinary students.” James White seemed to already have an idea.

“Not ordinary students?” William Carter was slightly taken aback, not understanding what James White meant.

James White pondered for a moment and said, “The practical test requires four students to freely form a team. This rule has huge loopholes and flaws, but the Federation has insisted on using it for decades without change. Under this rule, there have been many students whose own abilities aren’t strong, but because their teammates are very strong, they achieve results that don’t match their own abilities.”

After a pause, James White continued, “There’s a student at our school named John Thompson. If you’re willing to team up with him, and if he agrees, no one should trouble you again. But as a condition, you must do your best to help him achieve a good result, and he must be the top performer in the team.”

“You mean, you want me to be John Thompson’s ringer?” William Carter wasn’t stupid and naturally understood what James White meant.

“Under normal circumstances, you wouldn’t have to do this. But now, even if you can’t be the top performer in the team, you can still get a good result. It’s much better than not being able to participate in the practical test at all.” James White said.

William Carter wasn’t a stubborn person. Without much hesitation, he thought for a moment and said, “Then please help me contact John Thompson, Mr. White. But does our school really have a student named John Thompson?”

If Guide High really had such a well-connected student, William Carter should have heard of him.

“John Thompson is indeed a student at our school, but except for the day he registered, he’s hardly ever come to school. It’s normal that you don’t know him. Even among the teachers, not many know about him.” James White smiled and said, “Anyway, let’s get through this immediate difficulty first. We can plan for other things later.”
