"Right now, no matter who you ask, no one can get a big order. Even Olivia Baker can't get a single one. Once May comes and all the construction sites start up, I'll naturally bring in a million-yuan order. Do you think it's better for me to do one or two million-yuan orders a year... or fifty thousand a month?"
"This..." The profit from big orders is high, while the profit from small orders is much lower. Emily Cooper was well aware of this, but she instinctively felt doubtful about David Clark's words and hesitated to answer.
"The company's development depends on efficiency, and you also have to look at long-term benefits. If you only care about a little immediate profit, you'll lose out on long-term gains. How can you make the company bigger and better that way, Manager Cooper? ... I'm not criticizing you, but as a young person, you still have a lot to learn. Being short-sighted is absolutely not acceptable. Although you shouldn't aim too high, you must at least have lofty ambitions!"
Seeing Emily Cooper looking stunned by his words, David Clark couldn't help but secretly laugh to himself. It seemed he could easily coast for another two months on his base salary. He said earnestly, "Alright! I won't say any more. If you have any business-related questions in the future, you can ask Olivia Baker. For errands and odd jobs, let John Miller and Jason Wright handle them—they'll definitely be happy to help you. As for other small matters, you can have Eric Harris take care of them; the young lady is quite meticulous. And if you need any PR work done, just let Sarah Thompson handle it—she's especially talented in that area."
After saying this, David Clark walked out of the suite in a carefree manner, leaving behind the still-dazed Emily Cooper.
"What he said does make sense. I really do need to learn more about managing people. Good thing he reminded me," Emily Cooper reflected on David Clark's words, nodding twice in a row. But then she suddenly thought of an important issue, "Wait a minute! How come none of this involves him?"
Chapter 5: Testing the Waters
There were seven people in the company—four women and three men. Aside from John Miller and Jason Wright, who were a bit older, David Clark was twenty-six, and the other women were about the same age as him. They were all considered young people. After a couple of drinks at the restaurant, the atmosphere quickly became lively.
"Manager Cooper, I won't say anything else, but being able to work with you, I, John Miller, will do whatever it takes to boost the company's performance!" John Miller raised his glass, making a bold declaration.
"Heh... you?" Sarah Thompson curled her lip disdainfully and said, "If Olivia puts in some effort, maybe, but you should just go cool off somewhere else."
"That was before, when I wasn't focused. Now, with a young and capable leader like Manager Cooper, I, John Miller, can definitely unleash two hundred percent of my potential! Manager Cooper, I'll drink this first as a sign of respect!" With that, John Miller tilted his head back and downed a glass of beer in one go.
A happy smile appeared on Emily Cooper's lips. She said, "Well said, Brother John. We need to give two hundred percent so the company can move forward at two hundred percent speed. No matter what, I have to drink this glass!"
As the company's manager, Emily Cooper wanted to bond with her employees, so she acted boldly and downed a glass of wine as well. Instantly, a blush spread across her cheeks, clearly showing she wasn't much of a drinker.
Next, everyone started toasting one after another. At first, Emily Cooper finished every glass, but after a few, she was already feeling the effects, her blush deepening until her cheeks looked as if they could be pinched and bleed, her eyes growing hazy as she glanced around at everyone. She said, "Everyone, I know I'm still a rookie. Even though I've studied some business management, there are bound to be many problems when it comes to real practice. I'm the youngest here, so I hope all you older brothers and sisters will look after me a bit more. If I ever offend you in the future, please don't take it too seriously."
Jason Wright immediately patted his chest and said, "No way! If you ever need anything, just come to us. At the very least, running errands and doing odd jobs is no problem for us."
This sounded familiar to Emily Cooper, and she glanced at David Clark, who was secretly laughing. She immediately remembered what David Clark had said to her that morning. Raising her glass, she said, "David Clark, you haven't had a drink with me yet today."
David Clark slowly stood up and said, "Manager Cooper, a toast to you!" Without another word, he drank it down.
"Great! That's straightforward!" Emily Cooper wasn't to be outdone and drank another glass, then picked up a napkin to wipe her lips. She said, "Like I said, let's treat the past as if it never happened. I hope you won't have any psychological burden. I'm still waiting for your million-yuan order."
"A million? What million?" Jason Wright muttered in confusion, while everyone else looked at David Clark and Emily Cooper, sensing there might be something going on between them. Thinking back to how Emily Cooper had called David Clark in alone first thing that morning, they wondered if there really was something fishy between the two.
"No problem, Manager Cooper, just wait and see. If I can't bring in a million by the end of May, I'll pack up and leave right away," David Clark replied with great confidence.
