Chapter 15

She could feel everyone looking at David Clark with mocking eyes, making her wish she could just disappear. She had originally wanted David Clark to be her shield, but now David Clark had made her lose all face—she regretted it so much she could cry.

David Clark, on the other hand, didn’t feel the slightest bit embarrassed. He watched Jessica Brooks gesticulating and bossing people around, feeling as if she were a clown putting on a clumsy performance. When a woman becomes shameless, she can be far scarier than a man. She must have colluded with Robert Miller beforehand, deliberately trying to embarrass him in front of everyone.

Seeing Emily Cooper’s awkward expression, David Clark slowly stood up and, under everyone’s gaze, walked over to Jessica Brooks. Squinting his eyes, he said, “Have you said enough, woman?”

Facing David Clark, who was a whole head taller than her, Jessica Brooks showed no fear. Instead, she raised her eyebrows and shrilled, “No! Do you think I want to talk about you? I just feel bad for Emily. How could such an outstanding girl end up with you?”

“Oh, Emily is really lucky to have a friend like you…” David Clark said meaningfully, glancing at Jessica Brooks’s clothes. “Not bad, Italian brand Roland.”

“That’s right, an authentic Italian brand—cost me over three thousand!” Talking about her outfit, Jessica Brooks looked even more pleased with herself.

“Oh? Then may I ask, Miss Brooks, where did you buy this outfit?”

“Tianjin! My friend specially brought it back for me from Tianjin.” Jessica Brooks’s smile nearly reached her ears.

“Tianjin… That can’t be right. As far as I remember, authentic Roland is designed by Italian designers, and there are only four stores in China—in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. I wonder when Tianjin opened a new branch?”

Chapter 12: Only a fool passes up a bargain

Jessica Brooks’s expression changed. She curled her lip and said, “Oh, come on. With your cheap street clothes, you know about Roland? What a joke.”

David Clark reached out and gently pinched the collar of Andrew Brooks’s shirt. “The fabric imitation is pretty good, but with real Roland, there’s not a single loose thread on any seam. Here, it’s obvious they’re sticking out. If Roland’s quality was like this, it wouldn’t be one of the world’s top ten clothing brands.”

Jessica Brooks felt a pang of guilt, but stubbornly insisted, “There’s no way it’s fake. Nobody’s perfect, let alone clothes.”

David Clark smiled faintly. “It’s easy to tell real from fake. You can check online at home to see how many Roland stores there are in China. Also, Miss Brooks, next time you really get a chance to wear Roland, you’d better fix the padding in your bra. Don’t let one side be bigger than the other—it’s just… too unsightly.”

“Ah!” Jessica Brooks quickly looked down and saw that her chest was lopsided—one side high, the other flat. She screamed, hurriedly covered her chest, and her face turned extremely embarrassed. Although none of the classmates laughed out loud, they all looked at her with amused eyes, making her so ashamed she wanted to disappear. She rushed out in a hurry.

In fact, Jessica Brooks had already conspired with Robert Miller. Criticizing David Clark in front of everyone was Robert Miller’s idea. Seeing that the attempt to belittle David Clark had failed, Robert Miller waved his hand and loudly said, “It’s no big deal. There are fakes everywhere these days. If you can’t afford the real thing, it’s normal to wear a fake. How about this: I’ll give everyone a gift card for the Crocodile store. Everyone can pick out a suit. Otherwise, if someone goes out wearing a fake and says they’re my classmate, I’d lose face.”

“Oh…” The people in the hall immediately cheered excitedly. Even the cheapest suit at the Crocodile store cost six or seven thousand, and Robert Miller not only paid for the party but was also giving out gifts—what a generous gesture.

Although he hadn’t managed to put down David Clark, Robert Miller was still pleased to have raised his own status in everyone’s eyes.

“Hey, was what you said just now true?” While everyone’s attention was on Robert Miller, Emily Cooper lowered her voice and asked David Clark.

“What do you mean, true or not?”

“Don’t play dumb. Are there really only four Roland stores in China?”

David Clark chuckled. “How would I know? I was just bluffing her.”

“You… If she checks and finds out, I’ll be the one embarrassed.” Emily Cooper was a bit helpless, but since no one could check online right now, and she didn’t know how many Roland stores there were in China, she figured no one else would know either.

“Why worry about that? I haven’t had dinner yet. There’s so much good food—if I don’t eat, it’ll go to waste. Want some?”

Emily Cooper shook her head. She was about to remind David Clark again, but he had already darted off to pick out food.

At this moment, Jessica Brooks had fixed her clothes and came to sit next to Emily Cooper, pouting and whining, “Emily, look at your boyfriend. He has no manners at all in front of women. Even if my clothes are fake, he shouldn’t have pointed it out in public.”
