Everyone was looking at David Clark with skeptical eyes. David Clark's performance lately was obvious to all—if he could land a million-yuan deal, then the others could probably pull in tens of millions a year. Still, no one was going to call out David Clark right now.
"Then we should have another drink, what do you think?" Emily Cooper personally poured David Clark a glass of wine, smiling sweetly at him.
"Of course, no problem. But Manager Cooper, don't make it a million yuan per glass, or even if I sold myself, I couldn't afford it."
Emily Cooper actually had that thought, but David Clark had already countered her in advance, so she could only smile and say, "Drinking is just to deepen our relationship, it has nothing to do with work."
David Clark held his wine glass, smiling at Emily Cooper, and said, "Then I’d love to have a hundred or eighty drinks with Manager Cooper. I wonder what kind of relationship we’d have by then?"
Such a blatant tease immediately made Emily Cooper's expression change. She liked making friends, but she always kept a line—she especially disliked frivolous people, and David Clark had clearly crossed her line.
Seeing Emily Cooper's face change, the others also felt a bit awkward. David Clark usually liked to joke around, but that was among friends. Saying something like this now was sure to offend Emily Cooper.
"Ha..." David Clark laughed, then straightened his face and said, "Manager Cooper, surely you can't even take a joke? In our line of work, this kind of thing happens all the time—you have to learn to handle it!"
Emily Cooper's tightly knit brows slowly relaxed, and the corners of her mouth lifted slightly. She said, "You're right, Brother David. There will probably be plenty of social events in the future. If I can't even take a joke, I might as well not work at this company." Emily Cooper finally changed how she addressed David Clark.
"Of course!" David Clark now sounded like a master teaching a disciple. "A joke is a joke, but you must never go too far. Like the joke I just made with Manager Cooper—that was a test. If Director Cooper had reacted too harshly, it would have embarrassed the other party, and the deal would fall through. But if Manager Cooper acted like it was nothing, the other party might take advantage and go even further. So, knowing where to draw the line is extremely important."
"Oh? There’s so much to it. Then how should I know where the line is?" Emily Cooper now asked with genuine curiosity.
"In this area..." David Clark paused, glanced at Olivia Baker, and said, "You should ask Olivia Baker about that—she’s the expert here." When it came to the key question, David Clark tossed it straight to Olivia Baker.
Sarah Thompson shot David Clark a flirtatious look and said, "Why not let Manager Cooper ask me? I’m an old hand at this too."
Jason Wright immediately laughed and said, "Oh, please. If she asked you, you’d probably get Manager Cooper to..." Realizing the rest sounded inappropriate, he quickly shut his mouth and took a big drink.
Emily Cooper was already asking Olivia Baker for advice on the matter. It was undeniable—she was a very humble girl. For such a beautiful woman to not be arrogant was truly rare.
David Clark, meanwhile, was enjoying his food and drink. With Emily Cooper being so easy to handle, the days ahead would probably be much more interesting than when Brian Cooper was around.
Chapter 6: The Fake Boyfriend
"Emily! It really is you—I can't believe I ran into you here!"
The seven of them, full and a bit tipsy, left the restaurant together. As soon as they stepped outside, they ran into a group of young men, all in their twenties, dressed in flashy clothes, thick gold chains around their necks as wide as a finger, luxury watches on their wrists—the very picture of nouveau riche. One of the thinner men looked at Emily Cooper with surprise and shouted.
"You are...?" Emily Cooper looked at him in confusion, racking her brain to remember who he was. But after all that drinking, her mind was fuzzy and she just couldn't recall.
"You really are forgetful! I'm your classmate from junior high, Robert Miller!" The man had already walked up to Emily Cooper.
"Robert Miller..." Emily Cooper frowned, thought for a moment, then suddenly realized and said with a hint of surprise, "I remember now!"
"Ha... It's been so many years since I saw you—you've gotten more and more beautiful!"
That one sentence from Robert Miller immediately cooled Emily Cooper's excitement. She suddenly remembered what kind of person Robert Miller was back then—always fighting, getting into trouble, doing all sorts of shady things. He really wasn't a good person. But she remembered what David Clark and Olivia Baker had just told her about restraint, so she forced a smile and said, "You're flattering me. Look at you, glowing with success—you must be doing really well now."
"Ha..." Robert Miller laughed twice, his eyes brazenly roaming over Emily Cooper. "It's nothing, just running a small ore processing plant, making eight or ten million yuan a year in pocket money, that's all."
