“Wait… I’m not doubting you, but first tell me which company it is.” Emily Cooper suddenly shouted from behind.
David Clark’s mind raced. He had wanted to leave quickly just now precisely because he was afraid Emily Cooper would ask this question, but he hadn’t expected her to remember after all. If he didn’t handle this well, he’d be exposed on the spot and have to pack up and leave. David Clark wasn’t really afraid of that, but to leave without having even gotten close to Emily Cooper, this beautiful woman, would be a real pity.
“How about this, I’ll get in touch with him in the next couple of days and have him arrange for someone from the company to meet with us. I’ll let you know at the latest the day after tomorrow.” With that, David Clark strode out.
When Emily Cooper first arrived at the company, she really believed David Clark could bring her a million-yuan deal. But after working these past two days, she realized just how hard it was to do business. After visiting a few clients with Olivia Baker, people were either cold and indifferent, or after a long talk still showed no sincerity. If it weren’t for Olivia Baker’s patience in negotiating, she would have left in a huff long ago.
Even someone as capable as Olivia Baker found it so difficult to get results, while David Clark spent his days doing nothing. Emily Cooper instinctively began to doubt David Clark’s words. On top of that, she had unintentionally learned some inside information about David Clark from John Miller, making her trust him even less.
But just now, David Clark had looked so confident, and now he was saying he’d take her to the company in a few days. Then, after returning to his seat, he immediately started playing games, as if he wasn’t worried at all about what he’d promised her. This made Emily Cooper start to doubt her own judgment. Could it be that David Clark really could bring her a big deal?
Her phone rang. The number was unfamiliar. In the past, Emily Cooper rarely answered calls from unknown numbers, but now that she was a manager, she was afraid of missing any call.
“Fangrui, is that you?” A woman’s voice came from the phone.
“It’s me. You are…?” Emily Cooper felt the voice sounded familiar, but couldn’t place it for a moment.
“It’s Jessica Brooks! Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten me too?”
“Lili, it’s actually you! I really didn’t expect you to call me!” Emily Cooper exclaimed in surprise. Jessica Brooks was her classmate from both middle and high school, and they had always been close, but lost touch after going to college.
“Heh… You went to a prestigious university, I just went to an ordinary third-tier one. How could I have the nerve to contact you?”
“Don’t say that, it doesn’t matter what university you went to. What really matters is what you achieve in society.” After these few days at work, Emily Cooper felt this deeply. What she learned in school was hardly useful; what mattered more was social savvy and accumulated experience.
“Heh… Enough chit-chat. Our middle school classmates are having a reunion. You’re not going to turn us down, are you?”
At the mention of a middle school reunion, Emily Cooper immediately thought of Robert Miller, and her brows furrowed. But it would be hard to justify not attending, and now she understood the importance of networking. Attending such a gathering might even benefit the company. After hesitating a bit, she asked, “Is it all our middle school classmates?”
“Of course, but you can bring family too. You haven’t gotten a boyfriend already, have you?”
“Heh…” Emily Cooper was about to deny it, but suddenly remembered how David Clark had helped her as a shield the other day. She glanced out the window at David Clark and said, “Not exactly a boyfriend, but I might bring someone along.”
“No problem, see you tomorrow at New Century Hotel!”
After hanging up, Emily Cooper hesitated for a long time before quietly opening the door and saying, “David Clark, come in for a moment.”
Though her voice was soft, everyone in the room—Eric Harris and Olivia Baker—heard it. Their eyes all turned to Emily Cooper in unison, because her tone was so gentle, completely unlike how she usually called David Clark.
David Clark was just as surprised. He didn’t understand how, in less than twenty minutes since he’d left Emily Cooper’s office, her attitude had changed so drastically. He stared blankly at Emily Cooper, not moving.
Being stared at by the three of them, Emily Cooper felt extremely awkward and realized she really shouldn’t have spoken to David Clark in that tone. She immediately straightened her back and said loudly to David Clark, “David Clark, get in here right now!”
But now, this only made it seem even more suspicious, filling the three with even more doubt…
Chapter 10: Class Reunion
Outside the New Century Hotel.
Emily Cooper was still wearing that purple down jacket, her hair casually draped behind her head, and just a touch of light makeup on her face. She wanted to look ordinary so that Robert Miller wouldn’t pay her too much attention, but her natural beauty made even the plainest clothes look stunning on her.
David Clark stood beside Emily Cooper, dressed in a dark gray suit and black leather shoes, looking quite sharp. However, the lazy smile at the corner of his mouth took away some of that sharpness.
