Chapter 4

“Hmm, what’s the difference?” Blake asked carelessly.

Emily Carter shook her head helplessly, looking as if to say, “You’re really hopeless.”

“There are a lot of differences. Silver Watch is under the World Government—they’re considered the guardians of humanity, mainly responsible for dealing with wild beasts or high-level zombies attacking Central City.”

“The Hunter Alliance, on the other hand, doesn’t answer to anyone, and its internal structure is very loose. Hunters are pioneers, mainly responsible for exploring dangerous areas of the world and hunting wild beasts as their mission.”

Blake nodded. “I see. So you’re here on a mission too, right?”

Chapter 3: Canine Demon Lord

“Of course.”

Emily Carter put down her bowl and chopsticks, tapped a few times on the watch on her left wrist, and a holographic projection of a humanoid wild beast appeared in front of the two of them.

From its appearance, this wild beast looked very close to a human. Its long silver-white hair hung down to its waist, and its whole body was covered in short white fur.

There was no fur on its face, which was very human-like in appearance. Judging by its looks, it should be male—or rather, a male creature. Two fangs protruded from its upper jaw, looking extremely sharp.

But the most surprising thing was that it held a katana in its left hand—yes, that kind of long samurai sword.

“Very close to human form. It seems to already possess intelligence,” Blake said.

“That’s right. This is a lord-level wild beast. The corresponding disaster level is demon-class.”

Emily Carter turned off the holographic projection on her watch.

“I remember you said you’re a two-star hunter,” Blake said.

Emily Carter nodded confidently. “That’s right. According to the rating, I’m not qualified to hunt this kind of low-tier lord-level wild beast. But, I’ve awakened for the second time, so my strength is more than just two stars!”

Emily Carter briefly explained to Blake the relationship between wild beast levels and awakened ones’ levels.

Wild beasts are divided into five levels: beast soldier, beast general, lord, beast king, and beast emperor. Each level is further divided into low, middle, and high tiers.

This is just the classification of the wild beasts’ own strength. If these wild beasts attack Central City, they cause disasters, and the disaster levels are the previously mentioned wolf-class, ghost-class, demon-class, devil-class, and god-class.

In other words, if a lord-level monster invades Central City, it counts as a demon-class disaster.

At the same time, to avoid unnecessary casualties, each organization basically sends members of the corresponding level to hunt wild beasts.

Hunters’ star levels go up to five stars, with five-star hunters corresponding to beast emperor-level wild beasts.

Emily Carter is a two-star hunter, so in theory, she can only handle beast general-level wild beasts. However, she has already awakened for the second time, which means her true strength has reached the level of a three-star hunter.

Awakened ones who have awakened for the first time can handle beast soldier and beast general-level wild beasts.

Those who have awakened for the second time, after gaining special combat abilities, can handle lord and beast king-level wild beasts.

Those who have awakened for the third time are currently the known pinnacle of awakened ones, and can even glimpse the origin of the universe—they are humanity’s strongest fighting force.

In Silver Watch, they are S-class heroes; in the Hunter Alliance, they are five-star hunters.

After dinner.

“Now that I’m full, I’m heading out!” Emily Carter said.

It was already around 7 p.m., and the sky was dark. From a distance, in the ruins of the city, only Blake’s room was lit; everywhere else was pitch black.

“Fighting at night puts you at a disadvantage, doesn’t it?” Blake said as he washed the dishes.

“Can’t be helped. This demon beast is nocturnal, and the city is so big—it’s hard to find it during the day,” Emily Carter replied.

“How about I go with you?” Blake put the washed dishes away in the cupboard, wiping his hands as he spoke.

“You? No need. If a real fight breaks out, I won’t have the energy to look after you. If you really want to help, just get some late-night snacks ready and wait for me at home!” Emily Carter said, pushing the door open and leaving on her own.

“Looked down on again, huh.” Blake shook his head helplessly.

Amid the ruins of skyscrapers, a white figure darted swiftly.

Emily Carter’s ability is “spiritual power.” Besides using it to form a long sword to slay wild beasts, she can also condense spiritual power on her hands and feet, allowing her to cling to the walls of tall buildings and move quickly like a gecko.

Moreover, the darkness had very little effect on her, because most awakened ones’ vision had been greatly enhanced. Although their night vision was somewhat affected, it wasn’t a big problem.

On Emily Carter’s left wrist, a radar-like projection appeared. The radar displayed various moving yellow and green dots.

Green dots represent the weakest beast soldier-level wild beasts; yellow dots represent beast general-level wild beasts; red dots represent lord-level and above wild beasts. The larger the red dot, the stronger the wild beast.

The principle of this radar is to detect the life signs of wild beasts to determine their strength and location.

Tracking a specific wild beast in the steel jungle of the city is like looking for a needle in a haystack—you have to rely on the radar.

“Nothing in the southeast district, nothing in the southwest district either.”

Emily Carter had been running around the city for more than two hours and still hadn’t found anything. Although she had encountered large numbers of beast soldier-level wild beasts along the way, she didn’t waste her energy on them.
