Chapter 7

He was just about to make a move, but unexpectedly, William Carter suddenly came out with such a statement.

Originally, he had followed along just to get rid of William Carter, but now, he suddenly became a bit interested and wanted to hear what this kid had to say.

“So tell me, what should I do?” he asked, squinting his eyes.

William Carter's mind raced, but his expression remained unchanged, calm and natural.

He could feel that the obvious sense of threat on him had quickly disappeared. Clearly, the other party had temporarily given up on killing him.

“It's very simple,” he said softly. “If you have enough magnanimity, then go and do something that ordinary people could never accomplish. Spread your reputation.

To win without fighting, it's not only fear that can achieve this effect. As long as the reputation is strong, it can actually work.”

“It's not the same.” Ethan Clark shook his head. “A strong reputation can at most bring a sense of oppression.”

“You've never tried it, so how do you know it won't work?” William Carter retorted.

Ethan Clark fell silent, as if pondering the answer to this question.

“Think about it carefully. I'm going back to rest.” William Carter was sweating inside, but pretended nothing was wrong as he turned and walked toward the martial arts school.

He lifted his foot—one step, two steps, three steps.

“Why didn't you learn martial arts back then?” Suddenly, Ethan Clark's voice floated over from behind him.

William Carter stopped in his tracks.

“Because of the times. The times have changed.”

He nonchalantly lifted his foot and left again. This time, Ethan Clark didn't call out to stop him.

Step by step, William Carter slowly walked away, but the cold sweat on his back had almost soaked through his undershirt.

He walked all the way to the side door of the martial arts school, reached out to grab the doorpost, and stepped onto the stairs. Only at that moment, when his foot touched solid ground, did his heart finally settle down.

Looking at the side door in front of him, William Carter was about to let out a long sigh of relief. He reached out and pulled open the wooden door.

Suddenly, his vision felt a little blurry.

In the lower right corner of his field of vision, at some point, a line of tiny, exquisitely neat characters had appeared.

The script wasn't any kind of writing he recognized, but strangely, he could actually understand its meaning??

“What the hell??! Did I not sleep well last night and now I'm seeing things??”

William Carter nonchalantly pulled open the door, walked in, closed the wooden door behind him, and then stood in the shade, carefully looking at the characters in the lower right corner of his vision.

This time, he recognized their meaning.

‘...Database missing, searching and repairing automatically, please wait.’

William Carter's heart skipped a beat. Could it be another hallucination? He vaguely felt that something was wrong with himself.

Before he could react, that line of text jumped upward, just like a programmer's code, and another line of tiny characters appeared below.

‘...Random search complete, spacetime framework established, system core rebooting.’

Then, lines of tiny characters kept popping up.

‘Core startup complete.’

‘Registering imprint...’

‘Registration complete.’

‘Pixel reconstruction beginning.’

‘Your level is—Bronze. A Bronze-level identity can now be generated.’

Chapter 004 Bronze Level (Part 2)

William Carter stared blankly at the lower right corner of his vision as lines of text popped up rapidly like programming code.

Data-like characters quickly appeared and disappeared.

Soon, after a bunch of incomprehensible technical terms flashed by, a line of characters that William Carter could understand appeared.

‘Initialization complete, Bronze-level identity generation beginning...’

Less than two seconds later.

‘Identity generation complete, loading...’

Then all the characters in the lower right corner instantly disappeared.

William Carter stood there, almost thinking he had just imagined it.

But as soon as the thought of self-doubt arose, before it could take hold, a mysterious, mechanical synthesized voice, cold as ice, drilled into his ears.

No... perhaps it wasn't sounding in his ears, but was being transmitted directly into his mind.

‘On the surface, you may seem like an ordinary office worker, but your true identity is actually a behind-the-scenes board member of the multinational conglomerate Mister Pharmaceuticals.

You are in charge of managing the security department, but the immense pressure from internal power struggles within the group has left you physically and mentally exhausted.

You returned to your hometown, hoping to give your weary soul some much-needed rest.

But unfortunately, the troubles within the group have followed you like a shadow. Even greater dangers have already accompanied you to this peaceful city.’

‘Identity mission: Resolve the impending trouble. (You may reasonably utilize your own powerful resources.)’

‘Mission completion reward: Obtain one random ability, talent, attribute, etc. from this identity.’

‘Warning: Once an identity is generated, it will be permanently effective.’

‘Warning: The greater the convenience brought by the identity, the greater the corresponding risks.’

‘Warning: You have one month to prepare before facing the enormous danger that is coming.’

Behind the wooden door, William Carter stood there in a daze, motionless.

In his mind, all sorts of information and details about Mister Pharmaceuticals and this board member identity flooded rapidly into his memory.

“What is this?? The legendary system cheat?”
