Chapter 14

William Carter stood up and quickly transferred one million yuan using mobile banking into his usual private account for daily use.

He then checked the time: 3:15 in the afternoon.

“Still haven’t had lunch yet, I’ll go eat something first.”

He glanced at the weather outside—sunny, neither cold nor hot. He simply took off his jacket, wore just a black hoodie and jeans, and headed out.

At the noodle shop downstairs, he casually ordered a bowl of minced meat noodles and quickly satisfied his hunger.

After paying, he called a taxi straight to Qiushang Park, which was where the headquarters of Xinda Network, his workplace, was located.

Meanwhile, in the car, William Carter directly instructed the Jane squad to begin interrogating that guy called David.

Compared to himself, Jane and the others were the real professionals when it came to interrogation.

In addition, he reassigned a new squad specifically to protect the Yuekong Martial Arts School, and also had other personnel investigating Ethan Clark’s side.

If Ethan Clark made any suspicious moves, he needed to make sure he could control the situation immediately.

Having done all this, William Carter felt he had made the most of the resources available to his current identity in a short time.

If any more problems arose in the short term, there really would be nothing more he could do.

The taxi slowly came to a stop at the entrance of Qiushang Park.

William Carter opened the car door, paid with his phone, got out, and looked at the buildings inside the park, suddenly feeling a sense of déjà vu.

In just a few days, not only was he caught up in two troublesome predicaments, but he also now had over a hundred million in savings and a team of elite subordinates.

“It feels like I’m still dreaming,” William Carter thought to himself.

He shut the car door with a bang and strode into the park, walking straight toward the office buildings just like the other hurried office workers around him.

The morning office workers, men and women alike, were all holding either breakfast bread or hot drinks.

William Carter also saw several people chewing food while holding documents, reading as they walked.

Some people’s phones were ringing nonstop, answering calls until their hands were sore.

Others were running at full speed, as if they were about to be late.

William Carter suddenly felt out of place among them.

Everyone around him was in a rush, while he alone was strolling leisurely, looking as relaxed as the elderly janitor sweeping nearby, with a laid-back expression.

He slowly walked into Building 5, where Xinda Network was located, and entered the elevator with a few others.

“Which floor?” a young man by the buttons asked.

“5th floor, thanks.”

“4th floor!”

“8th floor, thank you.”

Everyone chimed in.

William Carter was going to the 5th floor, so seeing someone else say it, he didn’t bother to speak.

Ding—the elevator reached the 2nd floor, and someone outside pressed the button to stop it.

The doors opened, and two girls in office attire rushed in, arms full of printed documents.

Among them, one had long brown hair draped over her shoulders, fair skin, beautiful features, and delicate makeup. Her eyes carried a hint of aloofness no matter whom she looked at.

But as soon as she entered the elevator, she spotted William Carter standing inside.

A look of recognition flashed in her eyes, as if she remembered this ordinary male colleague who sat in front of her.

But since they weren’t familiar, she just nodded and didn’t greet him.

William Carter simply nodded back with a smile, which counted as a greeting.

William Carter recognized this girl.

She was also an old colleague at Xinda Network, but since they weren’t in the same circle, they rarely interacted.

Her name was Andrew Smith, a grand-sounding name, and she had a cool, aloof personality. In the company, she was one of the two most beautiful women in the department.

Many male colleagues acted reserved on the surface, but whenever they had the chance, they couldn’t help but have some thoughts about her.

The old William Carter would occasionally feel the same way—after all, that was only natural.

Seeing a beautiful girl, it was only normal to feel attracted.

But now, he really didn’t have the mind for that.

Ding.

The elevator arrived at the fifth floor.

William Carter and Andrew Smith, along with two others, squeezed out of the elevator, while a crowd of people surged in to fill the empty space.

That’s just how office life was.

William Carter glanced back at the elevator, now packed like a can of sardines, and suddenly felt a strange emotion.

This office life that used to annoy him—now that it was about to end, he actually felt a faint sense of reluctance.

He left the elevator and swiped his card at the sign-in machine at the front desk.

William Carter looked up at the company nameplate hanging by the corridor: Xinda Internet Co., Ltd.

No one greeted him, no one paid attention.

Even the receptionist, a girl he’d once had dinner with, was yawning and hurriedly touching up her makeup with a small mirror.

William Carter followed the corridor, passed by two other small companies on the same floor, and walked all the way to the innermost part, where he finally saw the entrance to Xinda Network’s office hall.

He glanced over the entire office hall—most of his colleagues had already arrived, filling the dense rows of seats.

Each workstation was separated by wooden panels, and the sound of keyboards clacking filled the air.

“You’re here? Isn’t your vacation not started yet? Why are you here early?” A hand patted him on the shoulder from behind.
