Chapter 16

"What's wrong? Why aren't you saying anything? Weren't you having a great time taking advantage of me yesterday?" Ryan Sullivan gritted her teeth.

"Hmph, I did, I did. Do whatever you want!" James Carter glared, simply acting tough.

"You..." Ryan Sullivan was instantly fuming. She had thought this guy would beg for mercy, but instead he was being defiant. Just then, another colleague came in from outside. She shot James Carter a fierce glare, then turned and sat down at the desk opposite.

"Name!" Ryan Sullivan was the lead interrogator, while the other male officer was responsible for taking notes.

"James Carter."

"Age!"

"Twenty-five!"

"Home address."

Seeing Ryan Sullivan asking by the book, her face still stern, James Carter couldn't help but feel annoyed. He had been answering properly, but suddenly blurted out, "We live in the same house, and you're still asking me?"

The young officer taking notes was momentarily stunned, curiously glancing at Ryan Sullivan.

Ryan Sullivan's face immediately darkened. She slapped the table and barked, "Just answer what I ask you, no more nonsense."

"Then why don't you just say it yourself? Wouldn't that be easier?" James Carter muttered.

"Home address!" Ryan Sullivan shouted again, her expression now extremely unpleasant.

"Villa No. 9, Qinghuayuan Community." That was James Carter's current address.

The young officer was taken aback for a moment. He seemed to recall that Ryan Sullivan also lived in that community. Was this guy making things up or did he really live there? He glanced at Ryan Sullivan, and seeing that she didn't refute it, realized James Carter was telling the truth—they really did live together.

"So what's the relationship between these two? Could it be that Ryan Sullivan has a boyfriend?" The young officer couldn't help but wonder. Ryan Sullivan was a famously tough beauty in the criminal police team—bad temper, skilled in martial arts, and though she had plenty of admirers, he'd never heard of her having a boyfriend.

This made him very curious. He looked James Carter up and down again. James Carter actually looked pretty decent. If it weren't for the rough work at the factory and the sun and wind making his skin look bad, he'd definitely be considered handsome. His clothes were a bit shabby, but if he cleaned up, he could match Ryan Sullivan.

Chapter 22: Interrogated by the Tenant

"So what happened today?" Ryan Sullivan started questioning again.

James Carter didn't hide anything and recounted everything that happened today from start to finish. Ryan Sullivan listened carefully, and when James Carter finished, she asked, "Did you have a grudge with Ethan Brooks before?"

"Yes! He cheated my dad's company, and then my dad stabbed him."

Ryan Sullivan nodded, her expression softening a bit. She said, "Now hand over everything you have on you. We'll register it, and once things are resolved, you'll get it back."

James Carter took out what was in his pockets. He didn't have much—just a bunch of keys, a battered cell phone, and a cheap faux-leather wallet.

Looking at the wallet and phone, the young officer couldn't help but secretly curl his lip. A guy living in a villa using stuff like this? What a poser.

"Alright, wait here for the results." After confiscating his things, Ryan Sullivan and the young officer left. James Carter opened his mouth, but in the end didn't call out to Ryan Sullivan. Even though they lived in the same villa, they weren't close—in fact, they were at odds. What was the point of calling her?

James Carter waited for a while, then two more officers came in. As the door closed, James Carter saw Ethan Brooks standing at the doorway, peering in through the small window. He sighed inwardly. He'd heard stories about forced confessions at the police station, but never thought it would happen to him.

...

In the captain's office of the criminal police squad, Ryan Sullivan placed the written record and James Carter's belongings in front of the captain, Samuel Cooper, a tough-looking man in his early thirties.

"Xiao Shen, is there something you need?" Samuel Cooper looked at his most valued subordinate and smiled.

"Captain, take a look at this." Ryan Sullivan took out James Carter's diamond-studded bank card.

Samuel Cooper immediately snatched up the card and asked urgently, "Where did this card come from?"

"It was on a suspect. He's Mr. Wang Shimin's nephew. Mr. Wang gave him the villa."

"I see. So Mr. Wang actually gave him this card. Wait, how did he become a suspect?" Samuel Cooper frowned.

Ryan Sullivan explained what had happened.

Samuel Cooper's frown deepened, and he said angrily, "This is ridiculous. Go release him immediately."

"What about Captain Liu..."

"I'll talk to Captain Liu. Also, let's not get involved in this matter. I'm sure Mr. Wang has his reasons for doing this."

"Understood." Ryan Sullivan nodded and turned to leave.

...

"What do you want?" James Carter looked at the two officers with a grim face. Even though he was prepared, seeing the two of them come in, he couldn't help but ask.
