“Hmph, to deal with someone like you, we have to rough you up a bit first before you’ll confess honestly.” A policeman tapped the baton in his hand, then pressed a button. Instantly, blue electric sparks crackled at the tip of the baton.
“I’ve told you everything, what more do you want me to say?” James Carter knew he couldn’t escape, but he was still unwilling to just be beaten, doing his best to resist.
Another policeman glared and shouted, “Cut the crap! Every criminal claims they’ve confessed. Who knows how many people you’ve killed, how many underage girls you’ve raped.”
At this moment, James Carter was truly furious. If these were thugs hired by Ethan Brooks, he could accept being beaten, but this was the criminal police squad—standing before him were two detectives. Yet the way they acted now, they were even more thuggish than real thugs.
Staring hard at the two men, James Carter committed their faces to memory. He might be powerless now, but that didn’t mean he always would be. If he ever got the chance to turn things around, he would never let these two go, never!
Ethan Brooks stood outside the interrogation room, watching smugly as the two detectives went in. These two were his uncle’s subordinates, and under his uncle’s orders, they were there to teach James Carter a lesson.
Just thinking about how James Carter would soon be beaten by the detectives—no matter how hard, he could only take it—Ethan Brooks felt a surge of satisfaction. As long as he could see James Carter get what he deserved, he’d be happy.
Seeing the two detectives cuff James Carter to the iron chair, and one of them pick up the electric baton, Ethan Brooks’s eyes shone with excitement, eagerly anticipating the sight of James Carter screaming in pain. Both his fists clenched involuntarily.
Suddenly, footsteps sounded. Ethan Brooks didn’t even turn his head; nothing mattered more than watching James Carter get beaten. But the voice behind him forced him to look back.
“Did they start yet?” Jack Morgan asked in a low voice.
“Not yet, what’s up, uncle?” Ethan Brooks frowned.
“He’s got someone protecting him from above.” Jack Morgan said simply, then pushed open the interrogation room door.
Inside, the two detectives were just about to act. Hearing the door, they both turned to see Jack Morgan walk in, immediately looking at the deputy captain in confusion.
“You two, leave.” Jack Morgan said simply, then glanced at James Carter before walking out as well.
James Carter was instantly bewildered. What was going on now? Jack Morgan definitely wasn’t being kind. If it weren’t for his backing, those two detectives wouldn’t have come in to beat him. So why was he being let go now?
He waited in the interrogation room for a while longer, then Ryan Sullivan walked in, her face cold. “James Carter, you can go now.”
“I can just leave?” James Carter looked at Ryan Sullivan in confusion.
“What? You want to stay here a few more days?” Ryan Sullivan glared impatiently at James Carter.
“Of course I don’t want to stay, it’s just… I did hit someone. Isn’t there any consequence?”
Ryan Sullivan slammed the table and shouted, “If there was something, wouldn’t I have told you? Why are you being so wishy-washy? Are you a man or not?”
James Carter was startled. Ryan Sullivan really had a bad temper. He’d only asked her a couple of questions. But thinking about it, besides Ryan Sullivan, he didn’t know anyone else in the squad. Now that he was fine, it was clearly all thanks to Ryan Sullivan. Even if she was a bit harsh, he grinned and said, “Thank you.”
Ryan Sullivan opened her mouth but said nothing, handing a bag to James Carter. “Check it, see if anything’s missing.”
James Carter took it without looking and said with a smile, “Then I’ll go now. See you at home tonight.”
Just then, the policeman who had taken the statement with Ryan Sullivan walked in. Hearing this, he immediately chuckled.
Ryan Sullivan rolled her eyes. “What are you laughing at?”
“Nothing, nothing. I won’t get in the way of you two seeing each other at home tonight. I didn’t hear anything.” The young policeman chuckled again and winked at James Carter. He’d seen Ryan Sullivan go to Captain Zhao, and then James Carter was fine. Now there was a “see you at home,” so their relationship was obvious.
Ryan Sullivan instantly flared up, snapping, “What nonsense are you thinking? I just rent a room in his villa. James Carter, isn’t that right?” She grabbed James Carter by the collar, eyes blazing with fury. If James Carter dared say otherwise, she’d probably tear him to pieces right then.
Looking at the fierce Ryan Sullivan, James Carter couldn’t help but grin and quickly said, “Yes, yes, you just live in my house, we have no other relationship.”
The young detective almost burst out laughing. Ryan Sullivan really was the squad’s violent beauty—she even treated her boyfriend like this. Wasn’t it obvious she wouldn’t let him tell the truth? But in front of Ryan Sullivan, he didn’t dare say another word. If she took her anger out on him, and dragged him into the boxing ring during training, he’d be the one to suffer.
