Chapter 2

Edward Clark had six sons and three daughters. As for William Clark, who repeatedly squandered the family fortune and refused to change, he had simply given up on him. The Lin family was large and prosperous, never lacking heirs to the family business, so three years ago, he simply helped William Clark marry a wife, gave him some family property, and then washed his hands of him.

Although William Clark was hopeless, Edward Clark didn’t just marry him off to anyone. Whether for political reasons or something else, he married him to the third daughter Evelyn Blake of the declining Han family, a minor, fallen clan, headed by Henry Blake.

But William Clark remained the same as ever, squandering the last of his assets within just a year. If not for the fact that the place he now lived in belonged to Edward Clark, even that would have been sold off by William Clark.

However, two years ago, William Clark suddenly fell ill. After being rescued, he became a frequent visitor to the psychiatric hospital. Whenever he had an episode, he would smash, burn, curse, and even bite people like a mad dog. So he often stayed here for a month or two at a time, and when he improved, someone would come to take him home—usually a nanny hired by his mother would bring William Clark back to where he lived.

But this time, William Clark had been here for three months already. Although the current William Clark had been reborn from Tianhong Continent, and by rights should have been picked up long ago, no one had come for him. Every day, only an auntie-level caregiver would come by, take away the books William Clark had borrowed to read in the past few days, and bring him a new one.

As for the changes in William Clark, the ever-attentive Mrs. Grant who looked after him understood very well. Although she knew William Clark's mental illness would not be cured, in recent days, not only had William Clark stopped hitting and cursing people, he even called her "auntie" and asked her to help borrow all kinds of books for him to read.

William Clark placed the recently finished book, "Records of Jiangnan," by his bedside and stared blankly at the ceiling.

Although this body was weak and frail, as if a gust of wind could blow it away, there was actually star source energy in its bones. Not as much as in his previous life, but with star source, he could cultivate again.

Even though he had failed once before, William Clark still believed he could pass the Five Stars this time—there was no reason, just a feeling. But for now, he couldn’t cultivate; his body was simply too weak. Only after recovering his health could he begin his star cultivation plan.

From the books and magazines he’d read recently, William Clark was certain that cultivators on Earth were rare, mostly the stuff of legends. But William Clark didn’t believe there were no true cultivators on Earth—after all, even legends must have some basis to be passed down.

“Put on your clothes and come with me.” A cold, emotionless voice sounded at the door.

William Clark looked up to see a breathtakingly beautiful girl standing at the doorway, her expression as icy as a block of winter ice, her words devoid of any feeling. Evelyn Blake—William Clark immediately knew who she was. Although most of the original William Clark's memories had faded, the main ones remained.

Evelyn Blake was supposed to be an unimportant pawn in a deal between the Han and Lin families, sacrificed so the Han family could revive itself. The Han family did gain some benefit from the marriage; a single word from Edward Clark could bring them considerable advantage. Even without Edward Clark's direct involvement, just the news that the Han family had a son-in-law who was Edward Clark's son was enough.

In reality, Edward Clark would never speak up for William Clark; he had completely given up on this useless eater. But the Han family, just by having a son-in-law who was Edward Clark's son, gradually regained their footing. Although he knew what the Han family was after, Edward Clark simply couldn’t be bothered to care—whatever happened to the Han family had nothing to do with him.

At this time, William Clark's mother was anxious but helpless. Edward Clark had already given orders: if anyone dared send someone to the hospital to pick up that good-for-nothing lunatic William Clark, he would immediately drive all three of them out of Fenjiang City.

Although William Clark's mother, Helen Carter, still wanted to fetch William Clark, she was under house arrest by Edward Clark. Besides, William Clark had a younger sister she couldn’t ignore. In name, she wasn’t even Edward Clark's wife, just a concubine in the shadows, and Edward Clark had several such concubines.

For the sake of William Clark's younger sister, who was still in school, Helen Carter dared not ask too much of Edward Clark. She could only pin her hopes on William Clark's wife, Evelyn Blake, hoping she would take William Clark home for a while instead of leaving him in the psychiatric hospital all the time, though she knew this hope was slim.

Although Evelyn Blake enjoyed living alone in peace and wished William Clark would never return, after William Clark had been in the hospital for two months with no one to bring him back, she was happy but couldn’t pretend not to know.

Even though every time William Clark came back from the hospital, he was only better for about a week before returning to his old ways of crying, cursing, and smashing things, Evelyn Blake still braced herself and went to the hospital to fetch him. The Lin family didn’t care about William Clark, but if anything happened to him, it would give them an excuse to deal with the Han family. Although she, Evelyn Blake, had nothing left to fear, the Han family couldn’t withstand even a breath from the Lin family.

Glancing indifferently at Evelyn Blake, William Clark said nothing, simply got out of bed slowly and put on his coat.
