Chapter 12

“What are you carrying in your hand?” Evelyn Blake saw that William Clark was holding a bag.

“Oh, I saw there was still an umbrella at home, so I just brought it along.” William Clark immediately said in a flattering tone.

Evelyn Blake glanced at the blazing sun outside and thought to herself, does this guy actually know to be afraid of getting sunburned? Bringing an umbrella. This odd getup left Evelyn Blake speechless, but she couldn’t be bothered to deal with him and simply walked out on her own.

William Clark actually locked the door, then followed behind Evelyn Blake at a distance of more than ten feet, neither too fast nor too slow. Evelyn Blake found it amusing and thought, locking the door as if there’s anything valuable inside— even if there were, no one in this neighborhood would bother to steal it.

But seeing that William Clark was carrying the umbrella without any intention of opening it, even though she really didn’t want to talk to him, she was still quite annoyed. “You brought an umbrella just to carry it around and look at it?” As soon as she finished, she realized it was pointless to say anything—what use was it to talk to him? She didn’t expect him to answer anyway, so she just quickened her pace and walked on.

“It’s not raining yet, so why open it?” William Clark seemed genuinely baffled by Evelyn Blake’s silly question, answering with a straight face and even giving her a strange look.

Evelyn Blake was so frustrated she could cough up blood, but after thinking about it, she decided not to pursue the matter. With the sun so strong, carrying an umbrella for rain—she really was defeated by him. She just kept her head down and walked.

She thought she could buy a bit more vegetables and rice this time. Although she rarely ate at home, she couldn’t let that guy at home starve to death.

William Clark followed behind Evelyn Blake, looking around curiously. Although Evelyn Blake felt it was really embarrassing to go out with someone like him, she had already been embarrassed enough and didn’t care anymore. Honestly, she was buying groceries this time for the sake of the person at home. Even though she hated him, they still lived under the same roof. Was she supposed to let him go out and eat wild fruit again, and then have her colleagues come back and tell her that her husband was eating wild fruit?

She was just going to buy groceries, but the more she thought about it, the more aggrieved she felt. She didn’t know what mistake she had made in her past life to end up with a husband who was mentally challenged, and his brother often came to bully her as well. She wiped the tears from her eyes and suddenly quickened her pace.

William Clark noticed Evelyn Blake’s actions and sighed inwardly. It really was hard on her. Once his nebula formed, he would take the initiative to ask for a divorce. Since she didn’t like this marriage, there was no point in continuing. Although Evelyn Blake was one of the most beautiful girls William Clark had ever seen, a loveless marriage wasn’t what he wanted.

Suddenly, he thought of his fiancée back on Tianhong Continent, and a look of confusion flashed in William Clark’s eyes. This Evelyn Blake was just too much like his former fiancée Qingqing, both in personality and actions.

Although the market wasn’t close, it wasn’t too far either—they arrived in less than twenty minutes. It was a temporary market, with piles of construction materials by the roadside, probably about to be rebuilt. Some vegetable vendors had set up large sun umbrellas at their stalls, but the umbrellas were only so big, and many vegetables were still exposed to the sun, wilting in the heat.

Evelyn Blake couldn’t be bothered with the bewildered William Clark, just buying whatever she saw in the market. She wasn’t about to ask William Clark what he liked to eat—so long as he didn’t starve, that was enough.

By the time they finished, both of William Clark’s hands were full of vegetables and rice. Evelyn Blake figured it should barely be enough for him for a week. She didn’t go any further in, just turned around to head home.

Of course, William Clark didn’t say anything. Seeing that Evelyn Blake had finished shopping, he immediately picked up the rice and vegetables and followed behind. Actually, he had seen some taro and really wanted to buy some to eat—his instincts told him it would be very helpful for his cultivation—but he didn’t have a single cent on him. He would never ask Evelyn Blake to buy taro for him, so he decided that once his nebula formed, he would go out and find a job no matter what. He couldn’t keep living off a woman.

“Hey, Yu Xi, what are you doing here? Grocery shopping? Don’t you usually eat at the company? How come you’re at the market yourself now?” John Sullivan was overjoyed to run into Evelyn Blake here. It was the weekend, and he just happened to bump into such a great opportunity. Even if he had to shamelessly insist, he was determined to invite her to a meal. If she said she was busy, he’d just follow her home—after all, there was only an idiot at her place.

Evelyn Blake frowned, not expecting to run into this person here. She had no fondness at all for John Sullivan, who was always pestering her. “Yes, I’m buying groceries.”

“Oh, you haven’t bought them yet? Let’s go eat something first—it’s already lunchtime. This time you can’t say you don’t have time.” John Sullivan was secretly pleased. Finally, he’d caught her with no excuse.

“Oh, Evelyn Blake, could you please open my umbrella?” William Clark walked up to Evelyn Blake, smiling as he spoke to her.

Evelyn Blake had been searching for an excuse, and when William Clark asked her to open the umbrella, even though she didn’t want to do such a pointless thing, she went along with it to avoid John Sullivan’s topic. “Oh,” she said, and actually took out the umbrella and opened it.
