To give an example, even when practicing the same Eighteen Dragon Subduing Palms, the martial arts skills of Edward Carter, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, David Cooper, James Adams, Charles Baker, Samuel Grant, and several others differ greatly— the strongest are nearly invincible in the world, while the weakest are nothing more than second- or third-rate characters.
Mrs. Thompson was born with extremely poor innate aptitude, so even though she had three points in martial arts, she was still killed by William Harper in a single encounter.
If a young scholar in white were equipped with the Eighteen Shrew Techniques, and William Harper's martial arts differed from his opponent's by less than three points, there would inevitably be a fierce “dragon (cai) and tiger (ji) battle (hu)”.
Martial arts cards can be cultivated and improved, but innate aptitude cannot. Being able to improve innate aptitude is a fundamental change for a character card; the reward for opening a private school is extremely generous, far surpassing the other tasks.
These tasks were very tempting to William Harper, but he quickly forced himself to reflect—he wasn't here to play games and couldn't get lost in this world. Although he hadn't gained nothing, William Harper still felt a bit discouraged. After searching the entire village, he was also somewhat exhausted, so he randomly found a household, pulled over a bamboo lounge chair, and collapsed onto it, gasping for breath.
“All I want is to complete the newbie quest and then leave this place. Why are there so many complications, and how did I end up doing some chain quest for the Demon Blade's successor? There must be a way to finish the newbie quest, if only I think a bit harder...”
William Harper was quite sure he had searched the entire village and shouldn't have missed any suspicious spots. He thought so hard his head started to hurt, but still couldn't come up with a good solution. After pondering for over an hour and still getting nowhere, he angrily slapped his thigh. When his gaze fell on the light screen, he suddenly remembered that he seemed to have picked up a lot of cards earlier.
“Maybe there are clues here? I’m so stupid, I actually forgot to check the loot!”
With a few quick operations, William Harper brought up all his loot: a total of fifty-four cards, including twenty-six character cards, eighteen martial arts cards, and ten item cards.
These twenty-six character cards... were almost all ordinary cards: village women, yellow-haired girls, blacksmiths, farmers—people who clearly had no future.
Only two character cards were even remotely noteworthy: one was Angelic Boy, and the other was Luna Harper!
Even with his toes, William Harper could figure out that the Angelic Boy character card dropped from the high school boy who killed the young girl and was then killed by him. The Luna Harper card dropped from the young girl who tried to kill him but was killed by the high school boy.
These two character cards have names that sound ethereal, but in reality, they are both demon race character cards, and are monster-level demon cards on par with the young scholar in white. They came from the two “heroes” who slaughtered the village, tried to kill him, and ended up killing each other, both meeting their end.
Currently, Martial God of All Professions has developed a total of 385 character cards, of which 290 are ordinary cards with no potential, such as humans: shrews, village women, blacksmiths, farmers, yellow-haired girls... and demons: white tiger spirit, white bear spirit, fire rat spirit, iron-backed gray wolf spirit... all sorts of minor demons; there are nearly sixty thug and monster-level character cards, such as: young scholar in white, chivalrous youth, nameless young general, branch master, altar master, iron-backed gray wolf monster, tree demon, Angelic Boy, Luna Harper... and so on. Even higher-level character cards are quite rare; bear-tiger level and demon soldier level characters are already the main cards for high-level players.
William Harper really had no intention of playing this game and hadn't tried to learn about Martial God of All Professions. Henry Clark's introduction only covered the main points, leaving out many less important details. But now that the situation had changed, he could only carefully review the game introduction in hopes of completing the newbie quest and leaving as soon as possible.
