Chapter 18

After killing the iron-backed gray wolf demon, William Harper casually picked up the two cards that had dropped from it, slipped out through the back yard of the Wu residence, and knew full well that he couldn’t stay here any longer.

People always have the illusion that if they’ve taken advantage once or twice, they can keep doing so forever.

William Harper certainly wouldn’t make such a rookie mistake, thinking he could trick everyone with traps. He had already killed two enemies and was quite satisfied; he didn’t believe this trick would keep working.

Just as William Harper climbed over the wall, three tough-looking men rushed into the yard together. They’d noticed that the most formidable Thomas Wright and the most opportunistic Little Piggy had gone in but hadn’t come out, so they teamed up to break in. Of course, these three didn’t find anything unusual—William Harper had slipped away a step ahead and was already several hundred meters away by now.

The group that broke into Huangjia Village numbered around forty or fifty. After searching the village for a short while, they started fighting among themselves. While William Harper was setting up his counterattack at home and killing two people, Huangjia Village had already turned into a battlefield, with more than a dozen corpses lying everywhere, dissolving into wisps of white mist.

William Harper had no intention of getting involved in the conflict; he just wanted to get out of the village as quickly as possible. Relying on his familiarity with Huangjia Village, he wound his way through the alleys, and just as he was about to leave, the sky suddenly darkened a bit, and a commotion broke out in the village.

At such a critical moment, the villagers of Huangjia Village actually reappeared!

William Harper really wanted to ask the heavens, “Are you messing with me?”

The people fighting in the village also paused. No one knew who shouted, “Quick, accept the village massacre quest!” and immediately people started trying. William Harper wasn’t familiar with Full-time Martial God, but judging by the group’s reaction, he immediately guessed that the conditions to activate the village massacre quest must be different each time; otherwise, these guys would have dragged out the village belle Mrs. Thompson long ago to assault and kill her.

“I need to hurry and do a few more newbie quests!”

William Harper was quick-witted. He immediately brought up the circular light screen and, following the quest prompts, hurried to complete the newbie quests. He still had twenty-two left; if he didn’t finish them soon, he wouldn’t be able to go home today.

Fortunately, he had already memorized the newbie quests and took the most efficient route. In just over ten minutes, he accepted eleven newbie quests in a row and completed seven of them.

As he passed by the village belle Mrs. Thompson, he remembered another quest. Just as he was about to speak, a skinny man rushed over and delivered a flying kick at Mrs. Thompson.

William Harper was shocked—Mrs. Thompson had extremely poor stats and terrible martial arts, with only a sliver of health. If she got hit, she’d die on the spot. Whether or not the village massacre quest could be activated was a minor issue; he wouldn’t be able to accept his newbie quest.

Without thinking, William Harper thrust his spear in a backstab. From his position, it was definitely a sneak attack from behind. The skinny man wasn’t a master; he was so focused on his kick that he never expected to be ambushed.

William Harper struck him dead with a single thrust, and was momentarily stunned by how easy it was. Then, racing against time, he rushed over and asked, “Do you know where there are wild boars nearby?”

Mrs. Thompson was stunned for a moment, her cheeks blushing shyly, and she actually turned red. She stood up, gave a formal greeting, and said in a soft voice, “There’s one in the eastern valley, but it’s dangerous there…” Mrs. Thompson looked as if she was kindly warning him, but before she could finish, a blade came flying sideways and split her in two.

William Harper heard the prompt from the light screen that he had accepted the quest and breathed a sigh of relief. Just as he was about to turn and leave, the person who had just killed Mrs. Thompson swung a blade at him. The blade flashed like lightning, showing considerable skill.

William Harper could only curse, whipped out his Flying Snow Drifting Leaf Spear, and fought fiercely with the opponent for more than ten moves before finally finding an opening. He cursed angrily, “Are you out of your mind? Why do you kill everyone you see?”

The other person snorted and retorted, “As if you didn’t just kill John Miller yourself. We’re all villains here—who are you pretending to be, some kind of hero?”

Chapter 13: You Eunuch! Who are you trying to fool, acting like a hero?

William Harper realized he really had no way to refute that—he had indeed killed someone, and by sneak attack at that.

William Harper was eloquent and loved to show off, but he wasn’t the type to argue black was white. He could only keep silent and continue fighting fiercely with the Flying Snow Spear. After dozens of moves, William Harper gradually fell behind. The opponent’s blade skills were average, about the same as his, and his innate stats were even a bit lower, but his fighting spirit was wild, often using mutually destructive moves that made old Harper’s heart tremble.

He hesitated for a moment, then put all the experience points he’d just gained into the Hundred Transformations Soldier Art. The Boneless Soft Fist was already maxed out at one star and couldn’t be improved further. The Flying Snow Spear was limited by his race and wouldn’t let him increase his martial arts value, so only the Hundred Transformations Soldier Art could still progress.

Having just killed three people, the experience points he gained leveled up the Hundred Transformations Soldier Art twice, increasing his martial arts by more than three points. The Flying Snow Drifting Leaf Spear in his hand spun out seven or eight spear flowers in a row, forcing his opponent back three steps.

The level and star rating of a character card are determined by the strongest martial arts card, but the character’s martial arts value is calculated from several martial arts combined—though at most, only five martial arts can be counted; you can’t stack them without limit.
