Chapter 20

William Harper actually really disliked the “Demonic Blade Inheritance,” this blood-soaked chain quest. Even as his quest completion increased, it didn’t make him much happier. He rubbed his chin a few times, thinking to himself, “I definitely haven’t killed that many people. In other words: among the people I killed, someone was close to finishing this quest, and their progress got transferred to me. The pity is, after such a big slaughter, I still have eleven newbie tasks left unfinished.”

Just thinking about having to wait for Huangjia Village to respawn again made William Harper feel—utterly frustrated!

  Night was gradually falling!

William Harper, bored out of his mind, laid out all his cards.

Although he had killed quite a few people, the only truly valuable loot were the two character cards dropped by Thomas Wright—the “White Tiger Spirit” and the “Yellow River Gang Branch Leader” in the form of a burly, yellow-bearded man—as well as that “Tiger Form Freehand” card.

The Yellow River Gang Branch Leader in the yellow-bearded man’s form didn’t drop any cards, probably because Thomas Wright had unequipped his martial arts card before dying, refusing to let William Harper get any more benefits.

Thomas Wright died twice at William Harper’s hands, both times feeling extremely aggrieved—never once facing him head-on, and never getting to use even a tenth of his skills.

William Harper poured all his experience into the “Ever-Changing Soldier’s Manual.” The “ding-dong” notification sounded like a sluice gate opening, making him suddenly snap awake. He slapped his thigh hard and cursed himself, “Idiot! How could I forget this?”

William Harper hurried back to the little dark room and switched character cards, swapping the “White-Clad Scholar” for the “White Tiger Spirit” dropped by Thomas Wright. Sure enough, he saw several new options appear in the system.

“I’m a newbie who hasn’t finished the starter quest, but none of these guys’ character cards are newbie accounts—they’ve all completed the starter quest! How could I only just think of this?”

William Harper selected “Exit Full-time Martial God.” With a flash of light before his eyes, the White Tiger Spirit vanished from the bizarre world and reappeared in his room. Seeing the familiar room, the familiar computer, the familiar bed, William Harper was instantly overjoyed and gave his own intelligence a thumbs-up.

He reached for the mouse, about to go on a shopping website, when he suddenly felt something was off—the mouse seemed to have grown a lot of fur.

William Harper glanced at the mouse and realized it hadn’t grown fur at all—it was his hand… not only covered in white fur, but actually a “tiger’s paw”… a “white tiger’s paw”!

This shock was no small matter—William Harper screamed on the spot, until the lady next door shouted angrily, “You little brat, even when you’re jerking off you have to be so loud? Planning to die from exhaustion? Can’t you keep it down? Everyone has to work in the morning!”

After being scolded by the lady next door, William Harper finally snapped out of it. He took several deep breaths before realizing he had returned in the form of the White Tiger Spirit, forgetting to switch identities. Luckily, he hadn’t appeared in public, or the consequences would have been unimaginable.

“Damn! I almost thought I’d turned into a monster!”

William Harper cursed himself, raised both hands, and stared at them for a while, muttering, “So this is alien technology? Henry Clark told me you could bring things out from inside, but she never said you could even bring the White Tiger Spirit out!”

William Harper entered Full-time Martial God again, back in that strange room. His own body was placed in a display case, as if in hibernation. He sent the White Tiger Spirit back into the character pool and switched out his original body. Looking at the other character pools holding the White-Clad Scholar, the Immortal Child, and the Moon Maiden, he fell into thought.

“If all these characters could return to the real world, wouldn’t that mean a bunch of clones? Just like the Invisible Man in that British sci-fi novel…”

“The Invisible Man” is an old British science fiction novel. The doctor in the story invents a drug that, when taken, turns him into another person—not the invisibility potion commonly used in later sci-fi. The point is: the doctor can appear in two different forms, and whenever one appears, the other is effectively hidden. But the doctor’s invention has a huge flaw: after taking it, his personality changes drastically, and he can’t stop taking the drug. He only succeeded once and could never make a second batch, so in the end, the drug’s backlash killed him miserably, and the protagonist uncovered his secret.

William Harper didn’t have any evil intentions, but being able to switch identities at will didn’t seem to have much to do with doing good either. After thinking for a while, he stopped dwelling on it. William Harper even felt a bit wary of these character cards, sensing that some desire within him was being awakened.

After switching back to his own body, William Harper felt a brief sense of discomfort. Compared to the powerful characters in Full-time Martial God, this body was just no match at all.

William Harper comforted himself a bit—at least it was the original, which had some sentimental value. Just as he was about to exit the game, he suddenly remembered the martial arts cards in his hand and couldn’t help but think, “Since it’s alien technology, maybe I can use them on my real body too?”
