Chapter 3

“Magic prices are as follows:

Mortal magic: Level 0 magic = 1 free point. Level 1 magic = 10 free points. Level 2 magic = 20 free points, and so on. Level 10 magic = 100 free points.

Legendary magic: Level 11 costs 500 free points, level 12 costs 1,000 free points, level 13 costs 2,000, and so on. The peak, level 19 legendary magic, costs 128,000 free points.

  Demi-god divine spells: Currently locked.”

Alright, this explanation is clear enough.

In other words, as long as Luke Carter keeps completing the tasks issued by the game system, he will keep earning free points and keep growing, all the way to the peak of legend.

Of course, that’s for the future.

Right now, Luke Carter only has 20 free points. He must allocate these points wisely to gain enough power to escape from Greystone.

In his previous life in the game, Luke Carter chose to be a mage, so his starting point for escaping Greystone City was also the Fleming Lower Magic Academy.

On the night of the Blood Moon, the Magic Academy was a key target for the dark elf assassins.

The Magic Academy was very small, with only about a hundred magic apprentices, and fewer than twenty official mages in total. The highest mage level was only level 4.

But there were at least two hundred assassins assigned here, and more than twenty had already infiltrated in advance.

Half of the academy’s magic instructors were killed in their sleep. Some of the survivors woke up, but they were still outnumbered. In the end, the entire Magic Academy was wiped out—every single magic apprentice was killed!

The whole process was nothing short of a massacre!

Recalling the details of his escape in his previous life, Luke Carter first purchased the magic he would use.

  “Summon magic list.”

Immediately, a large number of slowly rotating glowing cards appeared in his field of vision. Each card represented a magic spell. The top left corner of each card showed the mana cost, and the top right corner showed the magic level, ranging from level 0 apprentice magic to level 19 legendary peak magic—there were thousands of cards in total.

The higher the level of the card, the more dazzling its glow.

The brilliance of those legendary magic cards was almost blinding to Luke Carter. With just a glance, Luke Carter saw legendary spells with fearsome reputations like “Finger of Death,” “Doom Meteor,” “Grand Disintegration,” and so on.

‘Damn, if I had 2,000 free points, I could single-handedly turn the tide tonight. Unfortunately, I only have 20 points.’

Judging by the Lord of Light’s weakened state, sending him here was already a stretch, and giving him 20 points was already quite generous. Any more, and that pitiful old guy might have perished on the spot.

“Filter: only show level 0 magic.”

High-level magic is great, but he can’t afford any of them. He could afford a level 1 spell, but each costs 10 free points, and their mana consumption is much higher than level 0 spells, so he has to be cautious.

As for level 2 magic, with a price of 20 free points and a mana cost of 30, both the price and usage cost are too high for Luke Carter to handle right now—he didn’t even consider them.

Level 0 magic, also called apprentice magic, is just a firecracker if used poorly, but in the right hands, it can kill!

He had another reason for this choice: the higher the magic level, the more powerful it is, but the longer the casting time.

With level 0 magic, Luke Carter could cast one every 0.1 seconds. For level 1, it would take at least 0.3 seconds, and for level 2, at least 1 second. That’s far too long for solo combat.

With a swish, all the dazzling magic cards disappeared, leaving only a few dozen dimly glowing cards, all marked with a level 0 in the top right corner.

Luke Carter looked through them one by one, and finally, he temporarily chose four level 0 spells.

“Purchase Fire Bolt, Spike, Lesser Invisibility, and Sleep.”

Immediately, the corresponding magic cards in his mind began to glow, then suddenly shattered, turning into countless points of light and dissipating. Luke Carter felt a momentary daze in his consciousness, then quickly recovered.

After that, he found himself extremely familiar with these four level 0 spells—he could cast them at any time as needed.

‘That’s it? I’ve learned them already? This feeling of mastering magic is exactly the same as in the game.’ The familiar sensation gave Luke Carter a sense of reassurance.

After temporarily purchasing four spells, in order to use them, Luke Carter added 2 free points to his mana cap, raising it to 21 points—enough to cast 10 level 0 spells.

After adding the points, feeling the sudden surge of mana within him, Luke Carter let out a sigh of relief.

The game system was reliable enough: the first time you increased your mana cap, your mana was automatically filled. If it had been empty, he would have had to wait for it to recover. At Luke Carter’s current recovery rate of 0.2 mana per hour, raising the cap would have made no difference if it wasn’t filled.

Now, he had 14 free points left.

Luke Carter didn’t plan to use these free points right away. He didn’t know what unexpected situations might arise during his escape—he had to play it by ear.

He glanced down at his pocket watch. Only five minutes had passed; it was now 9:40.

The assassination operation wouldn’t truly begin for another hour. During this hour, the apprentice dormitory was safe, but outside, the assassins were surely already in position. Trying to sneak out of the dormitory now would be suicide.
