At this point, the two assassins were finished.
Magicians and assassins are natural enemies, their powers completely different. A low-level magician might be able to kill a high-level assassin, and a high-level magician could also be stabbed to death by a novice assassin with a single dagger.
When the two sides clash, who wins or loses depends less on level and more on combat experience and skill.
In this battle, Luke Carter's performance was nearly flawless.
Before and after the fight, Luke Carter used a total of five level-0 spells and one level-1 spell, spending 16 mana points. Throughout the process, he barely moved his feet—not because he couldn't, but because he didn't need to.
Information flashed through Luke Carter's mind.
Quest completed, player Luke Carter gains +15 free points.
A warm current flowed through Luke Carter's body. When Luke Carter checked his free points again, he saw that he originally had 14 points, spent 10 to purchase a level-1 spell, and now gained 15 more, bringing the total to 19.
The magic apprentice by the door had witnessed the whole process. He gulped frantically, and when the assassins were finished, he stammered, “Luke Carter, you... you... you...”
Was this really that unremarkable guy? Such spellcasting skill was simply unbelievable!
He didn't know how to describe the shock in his heart. What stunned him wasn't the magic Luke Carter used, but the aura of total control he displayed while casting.
‘It was just like a god!’ He finally found the right words.
There was no pride on Luke Carter's face. This kind of battle was child's play to him. He stepped forward and continued walking: “Celine, follow me!”
“Oh, okay.” Celine gave Luke Carter an admiring look, followed him for a few steps, and suddenly asked, “So where are we going?”
To be honest, tonight's dark elf attack was a bit unexpected, but she didn't take it to heart. The reason she followed Luke Carter was out of curiosity—this human magician had changed so much.
“To the academy's teleportation tower.” Luke Carter had already planned his escape route.
The city was surrounded by the dark elf army, and assassins filled the city. He now had 19 free points, but less than 3 mana points left in his body, and he was bringing someone along. Breaking out by force was unrealistic; the only way was to use the power of the teleportation array.
After thinking it over, Luke Carter spent 1 free point to increase his mana limit—1 point for 10 maximum mana—so Luke Carter's mana cap became 31.
Because of previous expenditures, his mana wasn't full, only 13 points, and the rest would take time to recover.
This was when the importance of mana recovery speed became clear. His current recovery rate was 0.2 per hour, which was almost negligible in such a tense battle.
‘There are still 18 free points left. That should be enough to handle unexpected situations.’ Luke Carter felt a bit more at ease.
Chapter 6: Survival or Mission?
There are two types of magicians.
The first type is the scholar-magician. These magicians are well-versed in magical theory and highly knowledgeable. When undisturbed, they can cast spells extremely well, but they are not warriors—once things get dangerous, they make all kinds of mistakes.
Unfortunately, all the magic instructors at the Glaston Magic Academy are this type.
After Luke Carter left the room and reached the second-floor hall, he saw the floor littered with the corpses of apprentices. Every tightly closed door had been kicked open, and the apprentices hiding inside had also been killed.
In one room, Luke Carter saw Grant; he had also been killed. He had clearly woken up before being murdered—his body lay on the ground, with a deep hole in his chest.
Bodies were everywhere, the air thick with the smell of blood. Luke Carter felt a bit nauseous, but his mental fortitude was extremely strong, and he forced himself to endure it. What surprised Luke Carter was that Celine, though pale, had already mostly regained her composure.
It seemed that, compared to her delicate appearance, this girl's mind was much stronger.
Luke Carter picked up a wand from the floor and handed it to Celine: “Take this.”
Celine nodded, took the wand, took a deep breath, and tried casting a fireball spell. It took her just over a second to succeed.
“Very good,” Luke Carter praised. For an ordinary magic apprentice, this was quite an achievement.
“Still nowhere near as good as you,” Celine smiled slightly, looking much more relaxed.
The two of them walked down the stairs to the first-floor hall, where they saw Mrs. Fairfax. An arrow was lodged in her chest, her eyes wide open, but she was already dead.
With a sigh, Luke Carter walked past the old lady, preparing to leave the apprentice dormitory.
Just as he reached the entrance, a striking line of glowing text suddenly appeared in Luke Carter's field of vision.
Second quest: Cut off communication
Quest objective: Destroy the teleportation tower in the magic academy to prevent the dark elves from using it to contact the dark elf army outside Glaston City.
Quest reward: 20 free points.
Seeing this quest, Luke Carter couldn't help but give a wry smile. The reward of 20 free points was high, but he had planned to use the teleportation tower to escape. If he destroyed it, how could he get away?
“Forget it, I'll take it one step at a time. Let's get to the teleportation tower first. As for the quest, I'll accept it for now. If the situation doesn't allow, I'll just give it up.”
