He turned around and left, taking one step, two steps, three steps. On the fourth step, Luke Carter stopped again.
He found that the feeling of reluctance in his heart had become extremely strong, to the point where it could no longer be ignored.
“All right, all right, since it’s your last wish, I’ll help you fulfill it. After all, I did take over your body.”
Strangely enough, as soon as Luke Carter made this promise, the emotion instantly dissipated, and he felt completely at ease, as if a shackle in his heart had been removed.
Luke Carter had a feeling that the original owner of this body had completely vanished.
“So devoted,” Luke Carter shook his head gently.
He would take this Celine away, of course, but not now. Right now, he had to steal... no, to take the Guardian Bracelet.
Chapter 3 The Path of the Mage
In the first-floor lobby of the apprentice dormitory, there were three display cases.
One glass case held a document, a handwritten letter from the previous lord of Greystone. Another case displayed a beautifully crafted ornamental sword, said to be a gift from a dwarven blacksmith. The last one was the magic bracelet, a relic left behind by a level-10 grand mage who graduated from the academy two hundred years ago.
In an era when the world’s mana concentration was low and legends were unheard of, a level-10 grand mage was already the pinnacle of mortals. This was truly the pride of the low-tier Fleming Magic Academy.
The real value of these items wasn’t high; their purpose was to showcase the academy’s deep history. So only simple alarm spells were set up—if destroyed by force, an alarm would be triggered.
However, Luke Carter knew there was a key to the display cases, and he knew where it was.
The first-floor lobby was much more spacious, and because it was late at night, the lighting was equally dim.
Luke Carter tiptoed along until he reached the door of Mrs. Fairfax’s room. He knocked gently on the door.
“Knock, knock, knock”—in the stillness of the night, the knocking sounded especially clear.
He had only knocked once when Mrs. Fairfax’s response came from inside: “Who is it?”
As expected, the old lady was a light sleeper.
Luke Carter said anxiously, “Ma’am, it’s me, Luke Carter from room 309. I have an urgent matter to discuss with you. Could you please open the door?”
This old lady was kind-hearted and would never refuse a young person’s request, even if it disturbed her rest.
“All right, wait a moment, I’m coming.”
There was a rustling sound from inside, probably the old lady getting dressed. Women’s clothing in this world was quite complicated, and the old lady’s hands and feet were not very nimble. After about three or four minutes, footsteps finally approached the door.
Luke Carter took a deep breath, raised his Crescent Wand, and aimed it at the wooden door.
Soon, the lock turned with a ‘click’, and the door opened, revealing Mrs. Fairfax’s wrinkled face.
“What’s the—”
Before she could finish, the wand in Luke Carter’s hand emitted a hazy light: “Sleep Spell.”
Sleep Spell
Level 0 Magic
Effect: Causes the target to fall asleep. The stronger the target, the weaker the effect.
The Sleep Spell was true magic. Luke Carter carefully experienced the feeling of casting it and found it wonderfully smooth, just like casting spells in a game!
‘If that’s the case, escaping Greystone won’t be difficult at all.’ Luke Carter felt confident.
This spell cost Luke Carter 1 free point and 2 mana to cast, but it was worth it. He couldn’t bring himself to knock out this kind old lady by force.
Mrs. Fairfax was only a level-1 mage, just barely entering the ranks of official mages. Her magical talent was extremely ordinary; she had earned her rank purely through perseverance.
Especially now, having been woken up in the middle of the night, her mind was still groggy, while Luke Carter’s casting speed was lightning fast. The wand flashed, and the spell was completed in less than a tenth of a second. She had no time to react and was hit instantly, her body going limp as she collapsed.
Casting spells at lightning speed was the talent that allowed Luke Carter to dominate in the game “Myth.” It worked just as well in this other world.
Quickly, Luke Carter caught the frail old lady and carried her into the room, laying her on the bed.
By his estimation, the effect of the Sleep Spell would last at most an hour. It was already 9:55 p.m., and that would be enough time.
Mrs. Fairfax was the dormitory manager and kept the keys to the display cases.
Luke Carter searched the room and finally found a large bunch of keys in the small drawer of the dressing table by the window. The old lady was a bit forgetful, so each key was clearly labeled with its use, which made things much easier for Luke Carter.
Easily finding the key to the display case, Luke Carter opened display case number 3, flipped it open, and took the magic bracelet.
The bracelet was made of adamantine and purple copper alloy, emitting a faint purple sheen. Around it were engraved numerous magical runes, and because condensed mana flowed within, the runes shimmered with a hazy silver light, making it look beautiful.
