Chapter One: What to Name a Son

Alice Parker was driving a red Bora, leisurely cruising down the wide road. He checked the time—it was already 8:50. At this snail’s pace, there was no way he’d make it to the company by nine.

Although Alice Parker was laid-back in his work, he wasn’t so perverse as to enjoy driving at a turtle’s speed. He wasn’t intentionally late; it was just rush hour, with crowds of people and endless streams of cars on the road. It made you feel like the entire population of China had gathered here.

“Anyway, I’m already late.” Alice Parker let out a breath and muttered to himself nonchalantly, “Might as well not let my stomach suffer.” At this hour, even if he rushed to the company, the cafeteria definitely wouldn’t sell him breakfast according to the rules. With that thought, he turned the steering wheel to the right and squeezed his car into a cluster of bicycles.

He turned off the engine. As he got out of the car, curses erupted all around him. But Alice Parker wasn’t a local and couldn’t understand what they were saying, so he didn’t care. Lazily, he walked into a street-side snack shop and ordered two servings of pan-fried buns and a big bag of soy milk.

When he got back into the car with his breakfast, the chilly air conditioning felt wonderfully refreshing. This crazy weather—it was already September, yet it was still so stuffy and hot in the early morning.

As he prepared to drive back into the main lane, a traffic police motorcycle suddenly zoomed in front of his red Bora, blocking his way.

“Hello, please show your driver’s license.” A tall, slender policewoman jumped off the motorcycle. The tight-fitting uniform accentuated her curvy figure. She walked up to the Bora’s window, took off her sunglasses, and knocked on the door. Her attitude wasn’t exactly nasty, but it was clear she was in a bad mood today. Otherwise, a traffic cop wouldn’t forget her basic manners—even if things like a formal salute were just for show. In Huahai City, people were generally very aware of their rights; complaints were a minor issue, but if someone made a fuss, it could easily become news. Besides, her tone shouldn’t have been so stiff, as if the whole world owed her millions.

He slowly rolled the window down a bit more, and the slanting sunlight hit Alice Parker right in the eyes. At the same time, the bright light let him see the policewoman’s face clearly. Even though Alice Parker worked in a big company and was used to seeing all kinds of beautiful office ladies, he couldn’t help but be stunned for a few seconds. Unlike those OLs with their slightly unhealthy pale skin, this policewoman radiated a healthy beauty, like the taste of sunshine. Her skin was wheat-colored, yet smooth as jade, not rough at all. With her fit and graceful figure, Alice Parker could tell at a glance that she didn’t have an ounce of extra fat on her. Especially below the neck—her chest, accentuated by the uniform, was full and perky, sparking endless imagination.

Julia Foster noticed Alice Parker staring and was momentarily stunned. Her already not-so-pleasant expression instantly turned gloomy.

Beautiful women usually have bad tempers—this was something Alice Parker knew well. However, what he didn’t expect was that this beautiful policewoman’s temper would be so explosive.

“Bang!” Alice Parker clearly heard a loud thud and felt his beloved Bora shudder. If he guessed right, the roof probably couldn’t withstand the wrath of this violent policewoman and had caved in a bit. The bystanders who had stopped to watch were startled and hesitated, wondering if they should get away from this dangerous scene.

“Where are your eyes looking?” The pretty policewoman, irritated by Alice Parker’s gaze, finally tore off the mask she’d struggled to put on.

Sure enough, she was in a terrible mood today. Otherwise, with her looks, why would she lose her temper at a random passerby like Alice Parker? Even if it was her time of the month, it wouldn’t be this extreme, right? Could it be that this policewoman had just gone through a clichéd story of a messy breakup?

“The continuation of life is an instinct embedded deep in the genes of every living creature.” Alice Parker coughed lightly and looked at her calmly.

“!?” The pretty policewoman gave a perfect demonstration of the phrase “eyes wide open in shock.” Clearly, she had no idea what this sentence had to do with blatantly staring at her chest.
