Julia Foster was taken aback; she hadn’t expected that this seemingly careless man could have such a sharp, intense look in his eyes when he got serious. It actually made her, who had once won the women’s combat championship at the police academy, feel a chill in her heart. However, the pride she had cultivated over the years wouldn’t allow her to back down. Her elegant brows arched as she said, “Not fun? And what exactly do you mean by that?”
Alice Parker swept his gaze around, glancing at the citizens watching from a distance, then turned back to Julia Foster and smiled calmly. “I advise you, if you don’t have the guts to kill me…” He paused, his previously unfocused eyes suddenly sharpening. “Then you’d better let me go as soon as possible.” When the policewoman was flipping through his wallet and driver’s license, Alice Parker had already realized that she was just using this as an excuse to make things difficult for him, not because she really suspected him of being some kind of pervert. If it was just an ordinary person wanting to vent a bad mood, Alice Parker wouldn’t mind playing along. But if she wanted to take things too far and get serious…
“Hmph, I’d like to see you try. What can you do to me?” Julia Foster heard the threatening tone in Alice Parker’s voice and became even more disdainful. In her three years as a police officer, she had risen from a lowly criminal investigation team member to the position of detective captain, earning merit after merit. Although part of that was due to her family background, it only ensured that her achievements weren’t overlooked because of her lack of seniority. Having dealt with countless cases, she was naturally sensitive to danger, and she could tell that Alice Parker’s words were definitely not just a simple joke. But as a former detective captain, she had seen many vicious criminals eventually surrender before her. How could her pride allow her to bow her head so easily? At worst, she’d just quit being a traffic cop.
“Captain!” Two voices called out, forcibly suppressing Julia Foster’s urge to teach him a lesson right there on the street.
Julia Foster turned to look and saw that an off-road jeep had stopped nearby at some point. Two plainclothes men quickly jumped out of the car and walked toward her, looking a bit embarrassed.
“Mr. Bolton, Mr. Thompson. What are you two doing here?” Julia Foster frowned deeply.
“Captain, uh, hehe, we’re here on business, just handling something nearby.” One of them, a tall man in his thirties, chuckled awkwardly. “We just happened to see you on duty, so we thought we’d say hello.” As he spoke, his eyes quickly darted to Alice Parker, who was handcuffed to the car window, secretly thinking how unlucky this guy was. Of all times, he had to run into the captain when she was in her worst mood. Of all the things to do, he just had to park illegally on her first day as a traffic cop after being disciplined.
Although Julia Foster was impulsive and had a strong sense of justice, she wouldn’t have been able to solve so many cases and earn so many merits without excellent reasoning and investigative skills. Her elegant brows twitched slightly—she immediately understood that these two former subordinates were worried about her first day on duty, afraid she might do something rash. Although it was mostly her father meddling, it also showed the care her former subordinates had for her.
“You’re just in time. Take this guy in first, we’ll talk later.” Julia Foster of course knew what attitude her two former subordinates had come with.
The tall man tried to persuade her with a troubled look, “Captain, how about we just let this go? I think this guy just parked illegally, that’s all.” Although it was easy to detain someone, the tall man could see that Alice Parker was well-dressed and didn’t look like an ordinary working-class guy. If he had some kind of background and made a fuss, it wouldn’t be fun. Besides, he actually sympathized with Alice Parker—what bad luck to run into a powder keg like this.
Seeing that Julia Foster was about to lose her temper, the other, a sharp-looking short man, quickly smiled and said, “Captain, it’s getting late. Why don’t we go have a drink somewhere?”
Alice Parker, watching from the side, was a bit stunned. It seemed this beautiful policewoman was no ordinary person. But the short man’s words made Alice Parker twitch his lips in amusement—getting late? What a dumb excuse.
Julia Foster seemed to want a way out as well. With her two former subordinates’ kind persuasion, she finally, albeit reluctantly, agreed to let Alice Parker go.
When the short man helped Alice Parker remove the handcuffs, he sighed sympathetically, “Hey man, don’t park illegally next time. You have to obey traffic laws.”
Alice Parker chuckled, rubbing his wrist. “You’re not suggesting I just let this go, are you? My car was damaged by your female boss. I think, illegal enforcement, violent enforcement, abuse of firearms—any one of these could get your former boss in serious trouble.” Alice Parker patted the roof of the car, pointing to a clearly dented spot.
The short man cursed inwardly in frustration. No wonder the captain didn’t like this guy—he was really bold, even trying to extort a detective. But then he thought about how Julia Foster was already in big trouble; if it weren’t for her father’s influence, she’d still be a traffic cop trying to redeem herself. If another incident happened now, she might really have to leave the police force for good.
