Chapter 14

“Mr. Parker, texting your lover again?” Little Bolton, that guy, looked at Alice Parker with a mischievous grin. “Look at that lecherous smile on your face.”

Alice Parker shot him an annoyed glare, just about to say something, when he suddenly felt a chill down his back. He quietly turned around and saw his good wife Grace Sutton sitting not far away at a table behind him, her expression icy cold. That glance just now had clearly come from her. No wonder the crowd had been chatting so happily a moment ago, but now the noise had died down, and some people had even stopped talking and just ate in silence. It was obvious that in just half a year, Grace Sutton’s iron-fisted management had made every employee in the company, big or small, feel a sense of fear.

Alice Parker was already considering whether to throw his phone at Little Bolton’s head. The room had been pretty quiet just now, and Little Bolton’s voice wasn’t exactly soft—there was no way it escaped the sharp ears of Grace Sutton.

“Just eat your food.” Alice Parker immediately put on a calm smile and cursed jokingly, “I’ve got plenty of lovers—want me to introduce you to a couple?” After saying this, he couldn’t be bothered to look at Grace Sutton’s expression and walked straight out of the cafeteria.

After a brief rest, he went back to wreaking havoc in World of Warcraft. Who knows how much time passed before the phone on his desk suddenly rang.

“Alice Parker, you’re not just ignoring President Sutton’s words, are you?” On the other end was Henry Carter’s slightly weathered voice, followed by a wry laugh: “You really have guts, kid, even daring to stand up the Iron Lady. Thanks to you, I didn’t get any good looks from President Sutton either.”

The Iron Lady, of course, was one of Grace Sutton’s nicknames. Her tough, decisive style was reminiscent of the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, so the nickname had spread throughout the company.

It was only now that Alice Parker seemed to remember he was supposed to meet Grace Sutton at one o’clock. He glanced at his watch—it was already nearly half past one. Stretching lazily, he took his time to use the restroom, then leisurely took the elevator up to the thirty-ninth floor.

“I really admire you, kid.” Before he’d taken more than a few steps, Henry Carter came striding over and gave him a hard slap on the shoulder. “Why is it that you get in trouble with President Sutton, but I have to suffer too? Great, now President Sutton sees the two of us as partners in crime. She picked on me a lot just now. Bad luck—life’s going to be tough from now on.”

Alice Parker secretly found it funny. This Henry Carter was really something—just a few words and he’d made himself much more likable, drawing them closer through their shared misfortune. To be honest, while Grace Sutton’s methods were tough, Henry Carter was both a senior executive and a shareholder, not to mention an old friend of her father’s. There was no way Grace Sutton would really embarrass him—Alice Parker would never believe it. The old guy was just putting on a show for Alice Parker.

“Hey, Mr. Carter, you’re not complaining to me because you want me to repay you with my body, are you?” Alice Parker chuckled, patting him on the shoulder and leaning in to whisper, “How about I find you a couple of girls tonight to help you unwind, as an apology?”

“You trying to break these old bones of mine?” Henry Carter shook his head with a look of misery. “I’m old, I’m old. Can’t keep up with you young folks.”

After a few pointless exchanges about men’s topics, Alice Parker finally strolled slowly to the door of the president’s office. Not far from the door, the secretary Lina, who was working at a desk, quickly came over, her face a bit dark as she stopped Alice Parker from knocking.

“Alice Parker, do you have any sense of rules?” Lina looked at Alice Parker as if he were her mortal enemy. “You were clearly told to come at one o’clock. Look at the time now—fifty-two minutes late!”

Alice Parker knew that this Lina had been promoted by Grace Sutton after she took over, and was considered one of her trusted aides. After several encounters, Lina had noticed that Alice Parker showed almost no respect for Grace Sutton, which naturally made her unhappy. She was just waiting for a chance to teach him a lesson.

Alice Parker glanced at her nonchalantly and smiled. “Little Lina, you’ve really shown me what it means when they say ‘it’s easy to see the King of Hell, but hard to deal with his little devils.’” With that, he knocked on the door himself.

“You…” Lina was so angry she was speechless, her face flushed and her almond-shaped eyes wide. If they weren’t at the president’s office door, she might have started cursing already. Who knows whether she was more upset that Alice Parker called Grace Sutton the King of Hell, or that he called her a little devil. Or maybe it was when he called her “Little莉娜” and his roguish eyes swept between her shoulders.

Just as Lina was caught in an awkward spot, the door to Grace Sutton’s office clicked open. She stood at the door, her expression calm, quietly glancing at the two of them.

“President Sutton.” Lina was startled to see Grace Sutton, her heart tightening as she quickly lowered her head and called out softly.

Grace Sutton nodded slightly, her tone betraying no emotion: “Lina, go back to your work.”

Lina was momentarily stunned, wanting to say something, but after opening her mouth, she just nodded and left.
