Chapter 6

Not long after, with a ding, the elevator arrived at the thirty-eighth floor. This floor belonged to the General Affairs Department, with dozens of employees coming and going.

“Hmph, what do you mean my expression isn’t sincere?” Henry Carter snatched a cigarette in dissatisfaction. “No matter what, this time I got dragged down by you. You’re treating me to a full massage at Grand Tycoon Bathhouse.” With that, he was the first to step out of the elevator.

“Hey, hey. Mr. Carter.” Alice Parker quickly caught up, laughing. “Aren’t you just being sentimental? Who told you to lie for me? I could’ve gotten away with it, but you stirred things up, and now who knows what that woman will do?”

“Woman?” Henry Carter stared at him in disbelief, mouth agape. After a long moment, he sighed, “President Mu may be a bit cold, but she’s still a stunning beauty. Probably only you in the whole world would call her something as harsh as ‘woman.’”

It’s my own wife, calling her ‘woman’ isn’t too much, right? Alice Parker muttered inwardly. Though, the relationship with this wife of his was truly bizarre.

“Hello, President Carter.” As they passed by, employees who saw Henry Carter immediately stepped aside and greeted him respectfully. Don’t be fooled by Henry Carter’s usual easygoing manner and his casual banter with Alice Parker; within his own department, he was quite prestigious.

As soon as Henry Carter saw he was among his department’s staff, he immediately put away his playful smile and put on a serious, dignified face, giving a slight nod in response to the greetings. He also shot Alice Parker a covert look, probably reminding him not to forget about treating him tonight. Then he headed toward his own office.

The General Affairs Department was one of the most important departments in the company. Besides some daily operations teams, it mainly oversaw four groups: auditing, review, supervision, and investigation. You could say that any company activity had to go through these four groups to prevent mistakes and fraud in every link of business operations.

Because of this, the General Affairs Department became the most lucrative department. Who could keep their hands clean? Who wouldn’t be afraid of getting caught for even a minor slip?

Alice Parker was just an ordinary employee in the General Affairs Department. But high-ranking Henry Carter seemed to have sensed something unusual about Alice Parker through certain channels. That’s why he deliberately befriended him, getting close in private. But in others’ eyes, Alice Parker was just a lazy, ordinary worker—always late, slacking off at work—probably wouldn’t even last the three-month probation before getting fired.

“Mr. Parker, I think you’d better prepare yourself.” As soon as Henry Carter left, Little Emily, who had just greeted Henry Carter and was on good terms with Alice Parker, relaxed and put on a mysterious look.

“Oh? And how should I prepare myself?” Alice Parker smiled, carrying his breakfast to his desk.

You had to admit, Maoyuan Group was truly rolling in money. This entire building, such a massive office space, was used by only about a thousand people. So even an ordinary employee had a decent amount of workspace. Although, for better teamwork, the department used a cubicle layout like most offices, each employee still had at least fifteen square meters of space. In a city like Huahai, where every inch of land is precious, this was almost unimaginable.

And in the whole building, aside from a third of the floors occupied by employees, the rest were huge meeting rooms or various entertainment and leisure facilities: bowling alley, swimming pool, bar, dance hall, internet café, guest rooms, reception rooms, and even a cinema. All the facilities in the building were top-notch. As long as you were a Maoyuan employee, you could use them for free outside of work hours. Even during holidays, you could bring a few friends to enjoy them, and except for food and drinks, everything was free.

Such boldness—besides Alice Parker’s father-in-law, you wouldn’t find a second person like this in Huahai. Likewise, these generous benefits made Maoyuan Group famous and the most coveted company among white-collar workers. Of course, Maoyuan was extremely strict in its recruitment—character, ability, and so on were all important criteria. So every employee at Maoyuan headquarters was the elite of the elite. At the same time, the high benefits fostered a strong sense of belonging and loyalty among the staff.

In this regard, Alice Parker greatly admired his father-in-law Edward Sutton, the founder of the group. It was precisely his focus on talent that allowed the group to grow to its current scale. Just think, if they rented out all the non-employee areas of this building, the annual income would increase by tens of millions.

“I heard our review team leader David Harris is really dissatisfied with you.” Little Emily trotted over, half-leaning on Alice Parker’s desk, and whispered mysteriously, “Reliable sources say that this morning David Harris reported you to President Reed again.”

“David Harris?” Alice Parker laughed indifferently. “He’s been unhappy with me for ages. Let him do whatever he wants, I can’t be bothered.” This Little Emily was quite the character—well-connected in the company and always able to dig up inside information.
