Chapter 7

“Nice to meet you.” Jason Carter smiled and shook hands with Emily Brooks.

The name Emily Brooks was definitely not new to him, and he had certainly seen Emily Brooks before, but this was the first time they had spoken, the first time they had been this close.

Back in reality, Jason Carter loaded the magazines into the two pistols, placed them under the pillow, and let out a sigh.

“Let the past stay in the past. From the very beginning... we were people from two different worlds. Some things, once missed, are missed for a lifetime.”

After talking to himself, Jason Carter’s eyes became incomparably calm and steady. Now, he was a member of the People’s Liberation Army of China, in a certain military district, part of the Blade Special Forces unit of the Army. He had a mission... that he absolutely had to complete.

This mission was very dangerous—there was no room for even the slightest carelessness!

In the morning, after washing up and checking his things, Jason Carter slung the rectangular box over his back and left the hotel.

Jason Carter drove his modified army-green jeep toward downtown S City. He was heading to the racetrack to take a look—in professional terms, to scout the location.

“Hello, is there going to be a car race here in four days?” After arriving at the racetrack, Jason Carter asked a young man in a staff uniform.

“That’s right, but this race isn’t like the usual small-time events. This is the triennial car race—lots of big shots will be attending!” The young man spoke in a boastful tone, as if he himself were one of those big shots.

“I see...” Upon hearing this, Jason Carter narrowed his eyes. The “big shots” the young man mentioned were definitely underworld figures.

The state didn’t oppose car races, but this track wasn’t an official one. It was very dangerous, with safety standards far from adequate—some sections didn’t even have guardrails.

“Bro, if you’re thinking of entering the race, I’d advise you to give up! Your car doesn’t meet the requirements at all. Only cars worth over a million can participate. In other words, this is a game for rich kids—people like us are just here to watch.” The young man glanced disdainfully at Jason Carter’s jeep.

“You’re right, I just wanted to take a look.” Jason Carter replied casually.

Compete? Jason Carter wasn’t that bored. He was here because of his mission—he just needed to find Megan Clark. He had nothing to do with the race itself.

“Ring ring ring! ...”

Just then, Jason Carter’s phone suddenly rang. He frowned, rolled up the window, started the car, and drove away.

The number was unfamiliar, but only Emily Brooks knew his number. Who could be calling him? Someone from above? Unlikely, since when the mission was assigned, it was made clear that only Jason Carter would contact them—they would never contact Jason Carter first.

A faint smile appeared at the corner of his mouth. Jason Carter pressed the answer button and said, “Hello, which old classmate is this?”

As mentioned before, only Emily Brooks knew this number, and the call wasn’t from Emily Brooks, so it had to be that Emily Brooks gave it to someone else, or... it was a telemarketer!

“Damn, Jason Carter, you’re still as quick-witted as ever. I was hoping to mess with you a bit, but you saw right through me! Now you’ll just have to guess who I am!” came the voice on the phone.

“Who else would call me in such a hurry and talk so much nonsense? It must be Blackie, right?” Jason Carter laughed.

“Boring, you guessed it right away. But seriously, Jason Carter, where have you been these past two years? It’s like you vanished into thin air! Emily Brooks was the one who gave me your number. You’re the type who ditches his bros for a girl—show up after all this time and you contact her first, not me!”

Blackie was Jason Carter’s buddy from high school. They were very close. His full name was Michael Bolton, but because he was so dark-skinned, Jason Carter gave him the nickname... Blackie.

“I just ran into her by chance.” Jason Carter shook his head helplessly and explained.

“Alright, enough with the ‘by chance.’ But seriously, Jason, did you get that girl? I saw Emily Brooks a few weeks ago—she’s even prettier and more attractive than before. Most importantly... her old man is rich and powerful, a big shot in S City!” Blackie said over the phone.

Listening to this, Jason Carter was silent for a moment before saying, “Let’s not talk about that. We haven’t seen each other in over two years. What are you up to now? How’s life?”

“What’s that supposed to mean? Why don’t you ask where I’m going to school? You just ask what I’m doing now?”

“School? With your grades, what college could you possibly get into? Cut the crap.” Jason Carter rolled his eyes.

“Fine, you win! We haven’t seen each other in so long, and now you suddenly show up. As your bro, I have to give you a proper welcome! It’s already four in the afternoon—how about this, let’s meet at six in Shanghai, no excuses!”

With that, the call ended with a “beep beep” sound. After hearing this, Jason Carter frowned.
