Chapter 19

William Brooks's eyes sharpened as he shook his head and said, "Emily, it's better for you to keep some distance from that Jason Carter. That Jason Carter... is no longer the Jason Carter you used to know."

"Dad, what do you mean by that?" Emily Brooks was taken aback and asked in confusion.

"People always change. Time can change everything. Two years is enough to change a lot." William Brooks didn't say more. After speaking, he left the living room.

……

"First, I need to find out who Blackie had a grudge with! Once I find out..." Jason Carter was driving down the street, talking to himself.

By now, night had fallen. Jason Carter parked his car by the roadside, preparing to get out and buy something to eat. But just as he stepped out of the car, a firework suddenly lit up the night sky.

"Strange, it's not a holiday or anything this season, so where did the fireworks come from?"

"Maybe some kid from a nearby family set them off for fun?" The passersby around looked up at the fireworks in the sky and discussed.

The moment Jason Carter saw the fireworks, his expression changed. He immediately got back in the car and rushed toward the cheap motel. Others didn't know what the fireworks meant, but he did—it was an emergency signal from his superiors.

Back at the motel, Jason Carter took out a new SIM card, inserted it into his phone, and dialed a number.

"Hello, this is Falcon." Once the call connected, Jason Carter spoke into the phone.

"Falcon, I know exactly what's going on over there. That dead Blackie was your former classmate, right?" A questioning voice came from the phone, indiscernible whether male or female.

"Yes." Jason Carter answered truthfully.

As for how the higher-ups knew about these things, it was simple. Jason Carter was on assignment in S City, and everything in S City was under military control. All cases would be filed, including today's latest case.

"The person who killed him is called Drake. This Drake already has more than a dozen lives on his hands—he deserves to die! Also, this Drake has a grudge against the Lin family. Now you can use that."

Upon hearing this, Jason Carter said, "You mean... you want me to kill Drake? And make sure the news reaches the Lin family?"

"That's right. This way, you can gain the Lin family's trust and dispel some of their suspicions about you. Secondly... it counts as avenging your friend. Third, it saves some court procedures. We already have enough evidence of Drake's crimes to have him executed! Now, tell me in detail how you approached Megan Clark and what you said to her."

"What exactly do I need to do? Things can't be that simple, right?" Jason Carter recounted what had happened, then asked.

"Things are indeed not simple. From now on, your identity is that of a mercenary who returned from abroad—a killer. That Drake has a grudge against you; your whole family was killed by him, and you killed him for revenge! This matches exactly what you told Megan Clark."

"You must chase Drake into a crowded area and then shoot him dead. That way, the police will issue a wanted notice for you, but it will also make the Lin family lower their guard against you. However, you need to be careful from now on, because the police don't know your real identity!"

After these words, Jason Carter frowned and asked, "So... the wanted notice will be real? From now on, I have to watch out for both the Lin family and the police?"

"Correct. The act has to be convincing. The Lin family isn't so easily fooled. The few people we sent before... have all been killed. For your safety and the success of the mission, this is the only way."

"I understand. I guarantee to complete the mission!" Jason Carter said solemnly.

"Now I'll give you Drake's address. Remember it yourself. When you act is up to you, but remember... you must kill him before noon tomorrow, and you have to do it before the Lin family finds him!"

After these words, Jason Carter's eyes narrowed as he asked, "You know so much about the Lin family—could it be that we have someone on the inside...?"

"That's right. We have an undercover agent in the Lin family. We sent in five agents before; four have already been killed, only one remains! Once you get into the Lin family, he'll contact you himself."

"Yes, I guarantee to complete the mission!" Jason Carter saluted the phone.

"Beep beep..." The "beep beep" sound came from the phone—the other side had already hung up.

Jason Carter took out the SIM card, snapped it in half, and flushed it down the toilet. Then he did the same with the previous SIM card.

That card was useless now, especially since Emily Brooks knew the number. If Jason Carter entered the Lin family in the future and Emily Brooks called, it would implicate her completely. So Jason Carter had to destroy it and cut off all contact with her.

"Drake, huh?" Jason Carter sneered at the mirror and muttered to himself, "Tomorrow, I'll show you... what it means to wish you were dead!"

Previously, Jason Carter had wanted to catch Drake and hand him over to the police, but now he had official authorization. Since Drake's life was in his hands, he could decide how Drake would die. There are many ways to die, and Jason Carter wouldn't let him die easily!

"Blackie, tomorrow I'll avenge you. You... can rest in peace!" Jason Carter felt deep regret over Blackie's death. After all... Blackie was only nineteen this year.
