Chapter 17

Megan Clark said this, then gave Jason Carter a smile and continued, “You must find it funny, right? That I would say so much to someone I just met and barely know. But… I don’t even know why I’m telling you all this. Maybe it’s because you just saved me.”

Jason Carter started the car and said, “You can just forget about me saving you. It’s getting late. Tell me your address and I’ll take you home. I have things to do and no time to play house with you.”

As he finished speaking, Megan Clark’s beautiful eyes trembled, a trace of reluctance showing in her gaze. She murmured softly, “Will we… see each other again?”

“No, we won’t!” Jason Carter replied without hesitation.

He truly hoped they wouldn’t meet again, because he didn’t want to hurt this woman. But reality… is often cruel.

“My name is Megan Clark. What about you?” Megan Clark asked.

“If we really meet again, I’ll tell you my name. For now, just tell me your address!” Jason Carter twisted open a bottle of mineral water and spoke as he drank.

……

Meanwhile, chaos reigned at the racetrack. The bald man in sunglasses looked furious.

“Brother Feilong, we… we failed.” Several men in black stood beside him and said.

“Where are they?” The bald man took off his sunglasses and glared viciously at the men in black.

“We… we don’t know. They were probably rescued by that jeep.” One of the men stammered.

“What’s that guy’s background? Also, pull up the surveillance footage right now and find out who owns that license plate. Find him for me—I want to tear him to pieces!” the bald man said through gritted teeth.

“Brother Feilong, shouldn’t we be more worried about how to deal with the Lin family’s retaliation?” one of the men asked nervously.

“That doesn’t matter. As long as we take care of the jeep’s owner and Megan Clark before the Lin family finds out, we’ll be fine. Otherwise…” The bald man didn’t finish, but the men in black understood his meaning.

“Brother Feilong, what about the matter Young Master Ling assigned?” another man asked.

“You mean Zhang Yichun and his lot? Look at the situation now—who cares about those small fry? Kill them all and dump them in the river for the fish!” The bald man finished speaking and left.

Chapter 10: Shedding the Golden Cicada’s Shell

Jason Carter dropped Megan Clark off at the address she gave, then returned to his cheap hotel.

On the way, Jason Carter called Blackie several more times, but still got the “phone is off” message.

Just like that, Jason Carter took a cold shower and went to bed.

At eight in the morning, he got up, ate something, and lay on the bed thinking about how to get closer to Megan Clark.

Megan Clark had gone home last night. If nothing unexpected happened, the Lin family should already know what happened yesterday. With their resources, it wouldn’t take long for them to find Jason Carter.

Ring ring ring!… Just as Jason Carter was thinking, his phone rang. He looked at the screen—it was Emily Brooks’s number.

Getting a call from Emily Brooks at this moment made Jason Carter hesitate. He wasn’t sure if he should answer, since what happened a few days ago was so awkward.

“Hello.” In the end, he pressed the answer button.

“Jason Carter, where are you? Something happened.” As soon as he picked up, Emily Brooks’s anxious voice came through the phone.

“What’s wrong? What happened?” Jason Carter frowned and asked seriously.

“Blackie is in trouble…” Emily Brooks said softly.

“What? What happened to Blackie?” Jason Carter’s expression changed and he shouted into the phone.

“You’d better come over yourself. I… it’s hard to explain.” Emily Brooks gave Jason Carter the address, then hung up.

“Blackie…” Jason Carter quickly packed a few things and rushed out of the hotel, heading to the address Emily Brooks had given.

On the way, his unease grew stronger. When he arrived and saw the police cars parked around and ambulances rushing back and forth, his pupils contracted.

“Dead?” Jason Carter got out of the car, walked over to Emily Brooks, swallowed hard, and asked.

Emily Brooks didn’t speak, just nodded and turned her head away. She was a sensitive girl, and she and Blackie had been classmates. Now that something had happened to Blackie, she was upset too.

“I’ll go take a look.” Jason Carter took a deep breath and walked toward the three bodies covered with white sheets not far away.

“Hey, what are you doing?” But just as Jason Carter was about to get there, a police officer stopped him.

“Oh, I’m a friend of the deceased. I just want to…” Before Jason Carter could finish, the officer said impatiently, “You can’t look right now. Wait until the forensic team is done. The scene can’t be disturbed—we need to collect samples.”

Hearing this, Jason Carter nodded and returned to Emily Brooks’s side, asking, “When did it happen?”

“It should have been last night. I only got the call this morning,” Emily Brooks said softly.
