Chapter 13

They say daughters are their mothers’ little cotton-padded jackets. Emily Brooks always tells Mrs. Brooks everything, and Mrs. Brooks is quite supportive of her daughter’s ideas. So she knows all of Emily Brooks’s thoughts, and she also knows the name Jason Carter, though she doesn’t know what Jason Carter looks like.

“My good girl, there are plenty of men out there. Just because he doesn’t like you doesn’t mean no one else will. Why wait for him alone? It’s been almost two years, hasn’t it?”

Mrs. Brooks looked at Emily Brooks with heartache and continued, “Two years ago, he didn’t even leave you a letter before mysteriously disappearing, and he’s been gone for two years. That shows you’re not important to him at all! Besides… a lot can change in two years.”

“Mom, I’m so tired. I feel like the person he is now is a stranger to me, and I sense he seems to have his own troubles. His back… looks so lonely. I want to understand him.” Emily Brooks lifted her head and looked at Mrs. Brooks as she spoke.

“Sigh…” Mrs. Brooks let out a sigh, saying nothing more.

This time, she and William Brooks had originally planned a surprise visit to see what kind of person Jason Carter really was. They came, but the main character had already left.

……

In the surveillance room, William Brooks stared at the monitor, his eyes freezing for a moment as he muttered to himself, “Is it him? The one who just left the hotel? Could he be Jason Carter?”

At this, William Brooks frowned, thinking to himself, “That man has a murderous aura—definitely not an ordinary person. Why did he suddenly get close to Emily? What’s his purpose? Looks like… I need to have someone investigate him thoroughly!”

With that thought, William Brooks took out his phone and made a call, speaking softly into the receiver. About a minute later, a voice came from the other end: “Mr. Brooks, there’s no information on Jason Carter as you described. We can’t find this person in any records! There was data on him two years ago, but now it’s been erased!”

“So there really is a problem?” After hearing this, William Brooks hung up, his eyes narrowing.

Emily Brooks is his only daughter, and he would never let her be harmed in any way. The sudden appearance of Jason Carter made William Brooks deeply suspicious.

……

“Hello, the number you have dialed is powered off. Please try again later.”

Listening to the automated message on his phone, Jason Carter’s expression grew grave. He had already called Blackie more than ten times, but every time it said the phone was off.

“Forget it, I’ll go to his house and see. Hopefully, he hasn’t moved yet!” Jason Carter started the car and headed toward Blackie’s address from memory.

But when he arrived, he found only Blackie’s mother at the address. She hadn’t seen Blackie for several days either. Upon hearing this, Jason Carter felt even more uneasy.

Time passed quickly, and in the blink of an eye, three days had gone by. Tonight was the triennial underground racing event in S City.

In these three days, Jason Carter hadn’t received any news about Blackie, but because of his mission, he had no choice but to put the search on hold and drive to the racetrack.

At 7 p.m., the racetrack was already packed with people. Jason Carter parked his car to the side, got out, and scanned the venue. Dozens of luxury cars were parked inside, mostly Lamborghinis and Porsches.

The scene was chaotic, with all kinds of people present—from so-called “big shots” to office workers and small-time thugs. It was a real mix of characters.

Explosive music blared from every corner, pounding in people’s ears. Many cars were shaking violently, and it was easy to imagine what was happening inside.

Jason Carter popped a piece of Green Arrow gum into his mouth and chewed slowly. He didn’t smoke, since smoking could lead to all sorts of unpredictable situations. He preferred chewing gum, and over time, it had become a habit.

Jason Carter’s gaze was as sharp as a hawk’s. He was searching for his target. Finding one person in this sea of people was no easy task, but he had never given up. He understood that if you do nothing, you’re bound to fail; if you try, at least there’s a chance of success! He had always understood this principle, and he’d learned it early on.

Finally, his eyes locked onto an orange Lamborghini, and a faint smile appeared at the corner of his mouth.

Standing next to the Lamborghini was a girl—a girl in a red T-shirt and shorts, with fair, rosy skin, big eyes, and long eyelashes. She was even prettier than in the photos. Her name was… Megan Clark!

Chapter 8: Racing Turmoil

“Target locked. Now I just need a reason to approach her.” Jason Carter looked at Megan Clark, thinking to himself.

This Megan Clark was no ordinary girl. Her grandfather was a major drug lord involved in trade between China and Myanmar. A big-time drug lord is extremely shrewd—he would thoroughly investigate anyone who tried to get close to his family.

If Jason Carter didn’t have a reasonable excuse to approach Megan Clark, then… he’d end up in a very bad way!

“I need an opportunity.” Jason Carter narrowed his eyes. This mission was extremely dangerous—like asking a tiger for its skin.

Before Jason Carter took on this mission, many people had already sacrificed themselves. Their methods were different, but all aimed to get close to the drug lord and gather intelligence. But getting close to the drug lord’s daughter—this was the first time!
