Chapter 2

“Zombies from 'Resident Evil'?” William Carter instinctively gripped the fire axe in his hand even tighter. “Biochemical warfare? Did this city get... while I was asleep?” William Carter swallowed hard, not daring to imagine any further—the consequences would be far too insane.

The zombie stood dumbly in place, staring at William Carter for a few moments. Suddenly, its face twisted into a ferocious snarl, and its whole body lunged at William Carter.

Though it had long since lost its life, the zombie’s speed was still on par with a living person, showing no sign of sluggishness at all. Even before it reached him, William Carter could already smell the foul stench coming from its mouth.

“Die!” William Carter roared, dodging the zombie’s attack with ease. The gleaming fire axe in his hand sliced smoothly into the back of the zombie’s neck.

Creak... The strange sound of metal grinding against bone came from the zombie’s neck. The next second, the zombie’s head was already separated from its body, spinning a few times in the air before landing heavily on the ground, rolling to William Carter’s feet.

The zombie, now headless, staggered forward two more steps before collapsing to the ground in unwilling defeat. A stream of red, foul-smelling liquid slowly oozed from its neck.

William Carter’s eye twitched slightly. Even before he fell asleep, he knew that countries around the world were pouring all their efforts into developing genetic programs. He just hadn’t expected them to create such disgusting creatures.

A hair-raising moan echoed from a nearby building.

William Carter immediately looked toward the entrance of that building, only to see more than a dozen zombies, all dressed in tattered clothes and bearing severe wounds to vital parts of their bodies, yet still “alive,” walking out.

Staring at these monsters whose mouths constantly dripped nauseating slime, William Carter suddenly felt his stomach churn violently.

The dozen or so zombies, upon seeing William Carter, miraculously squeezed out eerie smiles and began walking toward him.

“You were once human too.” William Carter looked calmly at the approaching zombies, his tone tinged with a hint of sadness. “I don’t know what happened to you. But I believe you once wanted human dignity. Now that you’ve become monsters, let me end your suffering!”

As soon as he finished speaking, William Carter charged at the dozen zombies, dragging his fire axe. The gleaming blade sparked brilliantly as it scraped along the ground, and the moment it left the earth, it had already kissed the throat of a zombie. At the same time, its wielder’s foot sent another zombie flying more than five meters away.

What strength! William Carter was a bit surprised—normally, he could kick a person ten meters away, but now he could only send a zombie flying five meters.

But this surprise didn’t slow the swing of his fire axe. In an instant, two zombies’ heads rolled to the ground, and another was kicked several meters away by William Carter.

“Die! All of you, die!” William Carter swung his fire axe like a madman, felling two more zombies. One of them was even split clean in half by a single blow, the axe cleaving straight down from the crown of its head.

In the blink of an eye, half of the dozen zombies were wiped out. Just as William Carter was about to finish off the rest in one go, terrifying shrieks erupted from several other buildings.

The next moment, more than a hundred zombies poured out from those buildings—old people, adults, women, children!

William Carter stared in shock at the scene before him, a cruel smile appearing on his face. “They’ve all become zombies. Is there really no one left alive in this world but me? If so, is being alive any different from being dead? Fine! Since I’m awake, I might as well go out with a bang! I’ll kill as many as I can!”

With those words, William Carter gripped the fire axe even tighter, and the two zombies charging at him were once again sent to the afterlife beneath his blade.

“Come on! Kill!” By now, William Carter was already covered in the foul blood of zombies, looking like a blood-soaked demon as he charged into the nearest group of seven zombies.

The fire axe fell—zombie dead! William Carter kicked a zombie flying, the fire axe fell again—zombie dead! One zombie nearby was clearly faster than the others, and before William Carter could react, it had rushed to within a meter of him.

As a former special forces soldier, he knew that in a melee, if the enemy got too close, it meant death. In a hurry, William Carter slammed his left palm hard onto the zombie’s head.

There was no sound of impact; William Carter didn’t even feel his palm collide with flesh. The zombie’s head suddenly exploded, and its body collapsed to the ground after taking just two steps.

“What’s this?” William Carter looked at his left hand in disbelief after killing the nearest zombie. The head of the zombie he’d just slapped was completely gone—not shattered, but as if a high explosive had been buried inside and detonated.

There was no time to think. In the distance, a hundred zombies were charging at full speed. “Kill! Come on! Let me kill to my heart’s content before I die!” William Carter dragged his fire axe and charged forward once more.
