Lauren Harris frowned twice as she looked at the blood in the bamboo tube, her stomach twisting again. Even though she knew that William Carter hadn’t found a water source just now and could only use this chicken blood to temporarily replenish the body’s need for water, Lauren Harris still had no intention of drinking that stuff that made her uncomfortable just to look at.
“That’s all.” Lauren Harris shook her head and didn’t ask further. She could tell William Carter was holding back, waiting for her to finish her questions so he could ask his own.
“In that case, it’s my turn.” William Carter put down the bamboo tube in his hand and casually wiped the blood from his mouth. “First question: What is this ‘super energy’ that the Asura mentioned?”
Lauren Harris organized her limited understanding of super energy and said, “Super energy is a method for espers to train both their bodies and their supernatural abilities. Only by cultivating super energy can one improve and use an esper’s powers. It’s said that only espers can see the powers used by other espers. Unless an esper deliberately wants ordinary people to see their abilities, otherwise, normal people can’t see how an esper’s powers work or what they look like.”
“Are all espers’ powers the same? Where can you learn super energy?” William Carter asked simply.
Lauren Harris shook her head and said, “Espers are rare to begin with. I’ve only heard that there are just a few general types of supernatural abilities. Of course, occasionally there are some special and unique powers. As for learning super energy, there are two ways: one is to buy books on super energy training from the market and teach yourself. The other is to follow an esper and work for them; learning under their guidance is much faster.”
“You can buy books on super energy training?” William Carter felt like he was hearing a fairy tale. “If that’s the case, wouldn’t it be very easy to become an esper?”
Lauren Harris gave a bitter smile and shook her head. Her stomach growled with hunger, forcing her to swallow a bite of chicken. “It’s not that easy to buy. Those things only show up at auctions. Besides, espers are different from ordinary people. Not just anyone can become an esper just by getting their hands on a super energy training manual. Any esper nowadays can live like an emperor.”
Chapter 8: All for Survival (Part 2)
William Carter took a deep breath and looked at Lauren Harris. “Tell me in detail about the current world. How many cities are there? How many humans are left? Which city is the closest to us?”
Lauren Harris shook her head repeatedly. “I’m not an esper. How could I possibly know what the world looks like now? Communication is extremely primitive these days, and information is very underdeveloped. Many people may never get the chance to leave their city in their entire lives. The only thing I know is that there’s a city three hundred kilometers to our east. People used to call it Changle City.”
“Three hundred kilometers? Changle City?” William Carter stood up and looked around at the jungle, letting out another bitter laugh. Right now, he was clearly sitting on a concrete road, but all around him grew all kinds of trees and weeds taller than a person.
Ever since humanity fell from the top of the food chain pyramid, nature had once again embraced all living things, while humans shrank back into isolated cities. The days when cities were closely connected were long gone.
“I never thought that after sleeping for fifty years and waking up, I’d face such a shattered world.” William Carter looked up and gave a bitter laugh. “If waking up is this painful, why not just sleep forever?”
Lauren Harris replied softly and seriously, “My mother told me that everyone who comes into this world has their own mission. Maybe that mission seems very small, but if no one completes it, the world will collapse. You only woke up after fifty years of sleep—maybe it’s because you have a mission to fulfill?”
“A mission? Too bad, I’m not a believer in destiny.” William Carter said with a determined look in his eyes, “Last question! Why are there no guns? Not to mention heavy weapons like rocket launchers, why aren’t there even guns in the tribe?”
“Hmph.” Lauren Harris’s face turned frosty as she said disdainfully, “You can thank the zombies for that, and the espers too. Zombies are afraid of weapons and destroy them, and espers are also afraid of weapons hurting them or ordinary people getting weapons and forming new forces, so they destroy large numbers of weapons as well. Nowadays, except for those undiscovered armories, where can you find any firearms?”
“Hidden armories…” William Carter recalled some memories from before the experiment.
As an elite in the special forces, he naturally had access to secret training grounds and bases. Such secret special forces units were known only to high-ranking officers and special personnel in the military district; very few others knew their locations.
As a top-tier special forces unit, they didn’t just learn one skill, so each skill had its own training base in different places. Some secret bases even had two armed helicopters stationed there.
William Carter quickly recalled the locations of several bases from his memory, especially the one where he usually lived. Although there weren’t any armed helicopters there, the variety of conventional weapons was extremely complete.
