A burst of car engine noise sounded not far behind William Carter, the roar quickly approaching William Carter. Suddenly, the screech of an emergency brake rang out not far behind William Carter, followed by a crisp, angry voice: “Idiot! This is not the time to play hero, get in the car! Come with me!”
William Carter had thought he was the only one in this world planning to go down with these zombies. Suddenly hearing someone speak, he immediately relaxed, no longer willing to risk his precious life fighting the zombies.
Casually chopping down the two zombies closest to him, William Carter turned and quickly jumped onto the battered, antique-looking green military jeep.
The driver was wrapped head to toe in coarse cloth, so William Carter couldn’t make out their appearance. As soon as this person saw William Carter jump in, they slammed the gas pedal, the rubber tires screeching against the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust that left the pursuing zombies far behind.
Sitting in the jeep, William Carter couldn’t help but admire the driver’s skills, which were no less than his own. They could actually drive as if on flat ground through streets littered with car wrecks. Occasionally, a few zombies would suddenly dash out to block the car, but the driver would simply floor the gas and smash them to pieces.
“You’ve got some nerve! Even if zombies rarely come out during the day, you shouldn’t be searching for food alone in this dead city!” After driving through several streets, the driver scolded William Carter in a harsh tone: “Do you really think you’re one of those superhumans? That you can come and go freely among ordinary zombies? Still, you’re pretty impressive—taking down more than a dozen ordinary zombies with just an axe. You must be a super warrior, right?”
“Super warrior? Ordinary zombies?” William Carter’s expression changed as he asked, “Are there special kinds of zombies too?”
The person wrapped in coarse cloth glanced at William Carter, and William Carter saw a pair of bright, clear, and curious eyes.
“Are you an idiot? In the past fifty years, don’t tell me you don’t know how much the world has changed.”
“Fifty years?” William Carter asked in surprise, “What year is it now? Isn’t it 2010?”
“2010? Are you crazy? It’s 2060 now!” The person in the cloth said this, then suddenly hit the brakes and looked at William Carter, asking, “Are you from fifty years ago?”
“2060…” William Carter looked up at the sky with a bitter smile and muttered to himself, “I’ve slept for fifty years? What kind of bullshit experiment was that! Made me sleep for fifty years!”
The person in the cloth stared at William Carter for a while, then said in disappointment, “I thought I’d saved a level-nine warrior, but it turns out I rescued a useless antique. Whatever! A life is a life, maybe you’ll be of some use and not just a waste of food.”
Waste of food? In all his life, William Carter had never heard anyone say that someone as skilled as him was a waste of food.
“What are you laughing at?” The person wrapped in cloth, a bit angry, pulled off the cloth covering their head, revealing a dust-covered, angry face: “If you really are from fifty years ago, then you’d better listen to me! You have no idea how harsh things are now, you old relic!”
The dust-covered face made it impossible to see what this person really looked like, but William Carter knew they had a pair of bright eyes.
“How could I not know? I’ve already seen it for myself just now.” After saying this, William Carter looked at the other person in confusion and asked, “By the way! Why aren’t you surprised that I’m from fifty years ago? And I’m not called ‘antique’, I have a name: William Carter. May I ask…?”
Seeing William Carter extend his right hand, the person in the cloth reluctantly extended their right hand for a symbolic handshake and said, “Lauren Harris. As for people from fifty years ago, you’re not the first we’ve found. In the past three years, our tribe has discovered fifteen, but none of them were useful, and they all died quickly—none lasted even a year. Your skills are much better than theirs. In fact, if you didn’t have that strange tattoo on your arm, I wouldn’t believe you were from fifty years ago.”
“Tattoo? You mean those people also had this fierce wolf tattoo?” William Carter suddenly became excited! This was the signature tattoo of their Wolf Venom Special Forces—every member was an elite, handpicked from the best soldiers.
“That’s right, they all had this mark.” Lauren Harris said indifferently, “I thought it meant ‘useless’ or something. But seeing your skills, I guess it doesn’t mean that after all.”
“Useless!? You said useless?” William Carter’s expression changed, “How could that be? It’s a mark of the elite! Every one of them is as skilled as I am.”
Lauren Harris sneered, too lazy to explain to William Carter, and said coldly, “Facts speak louder than words. There’s still one of them alive, you can see for yourself. Besides, what good are your skills? Without good weapons, if you run into a demon corpse or other vicious mutant creatures, you’ll still end up dead. If you’re not a superhuman, you’ll always be struggling just to survive.”
“Superhuman? What’s that? And why has the world become like this?” William Carter asked, puzzled.
