At this moment, there were already four zombies standing on the wall, and a fifth zombie was struggling to climb up. The guards were desperately trying to stop the zombies from climbing.
A zombie dog not far from William Carter's room saw William Carter come out and silently charged at high speed, its mouth open, exposing disgusting drool only a rabid dog would have, lunging for William Carter's neck.
"Xiao—" Lauren Harris's "xin" had not yet left her lips when William Carter raised his hand and punched the zombie dog's nose, sending the dog flying.
The zombie dog tumbled several times on the ground, its nose smashed to a pulp by William Carter's punch. It tried twice to get up but failed, finally letting out two groans before collapsing, foul blood oozing from its seven orifices.
"Hey! Get up on the wall! If twenty zombies get up there, the tribe won't survive!" Lauren Harris shouted loudly.
William Carter casually pointed at the chief's house, then at himself and the city wall, as if to say, "If your boss isn't risking his life, why should I?"
Just as William Carter finished pointing at the house, Brian Bolton, dressed in a special forces combat uniform from fifty years ago and carrying a broadsword weighing over twenty jin, walked toward the wall followed by two people.
"That's the captain's uniform! That bastard killed the captain!" David Clark had woken up at some point, gripping William Carter's shoulders tightly and growling, "Kill him!"
William Carter's face was cold as he watched Brian Bolton walk past him. He whispered to David Clark behind him, "I will. Soon! I'll kill him very soon!"
The people fighting were instantly invigorated when they saw the chief join the battle, and in no time, two more zombies on the wall were killed.
"William Carter!" Lauren Harris shouted again, "Hurry! Help us!"
"I'll help your—" William Carter hadn't finished shouting when a scream came from not far beside him. He looked up to see a zombie dog biting the shoulder of the old lady who had pleaded for him earlier, dragging her with all its might. The old lady, lying on the ground, shielded the child beneath her with her body. Even though one of her arms had been bitten off at the root, she still held on. Chief Bolton, who was very close to the old lady, acted as if he hadn't seen anything and kept running toward the wall.
William Carter had planned to thank the old lady later, but before he had the chance, he saw her being mauled by the zombie dog while the chief ignored her. He was instantly furious.
"Goddamn you!"
William Carter was enraged and, without a second thought, hurled the fire axe in his hand at the zombie dog.
The fire axe spun rapidly through the air, reflecting blinding sunlight, and suddenly a spray of filthy blood erupted. In the next second, the zombie dog's head and body were completely separated.
Clang!
The axe head embedded itself deeply in the ground, trembling slightly.
William Carter ran to the old lady's side and helped her up—she was already on the verge of death. The child beneath her had also been bitten by the zombie dog at some point, though the old lady didn't know it.
"Is the child okay?" The old lady forced a smile, her pupils already unfocused.
William Carter knew the old lady could no longer see anything. He whispered in her ear, "Yes, the child is fine."
"That's good... that's good..." The old lady smiled faintly and said, "Come on, young man. Kill me. Don't let me become one of those monsters after I die."
William Carter picked up the fire axe from the ground, feeling its weight for the first time. He didn't care about killing, but to kill such an old lady—William Carter suddenly realized he...
"Hurry up... do it..." The old lady groaned, "I can feel myself changing... don't let me become that... I don't want to..."
"I understand." For the first time, William Carter closed his eyes and used the axe to decapitate the old lady, then, without hesitation, killed the infected child as well.
Lauren Harris felt her heart clench at the sight. William Carter let out a long breath and walked toward the city wall, murmuring, "You shouldn't have to kill even an old lady like that. Even if you've lost most of your ability to think, you shouldn't kill someone so worthy of respect."
A zombie dog lunged from the side, and without even looking, William Carter swung his axe. The dog's head exploded in midair, a spray of filthy blood splattering onto William Carter's body, face, and the handle of the fire axe.
Red blood slowly trickled down the axe handle to the ground, leaving a straight red line behind William Carter as he moved forward.
Several other zombie dogs, busy eating people, were attracted by William Carter's movement and pounced on him.
Thud... thud...
A few more zombie dog corpses appeared on the ground. Before William Carter reached the city wall, the ground inside the tribe began to tremble slightly again.
With several thunderous sounds of earth breaking, three more vicious mantis bugs appeared inside the tribe. A human who was too close to one of them didn't even have time to react before the mantis bug bit off his entire thigh. Its two scythe-like forelimbs stabbed fiercely into the human's chest, lifting him high into the air as it howled in excitement.
