As soon as he thought of those heavy-duty weapons, William Carter instantly felt his blood boil. As a soldier and a man, there’s no one who doesn’t love firearms—especially heavy weapons, which are every man’s favorite.
“What was Changlecheng called before? I need a coordinate to orient myself.” William Carter looked at Lauren Harris with a murderous glare. During the last experiment before he went into hibernation, in order to keep everything secret, even the test subjects like them didn’t know which city they were transported to for the experiment. Thinking of this made William Carter burn with anger.
“I don’t know. By the time I was born, it was already called Changlecheng.” Lauren Harris shook her head gently and said, “When survival is at stake, who still cares about the city’s original name?”
William Carter nodded and looked at the ground, saying bitterly, “Superpowers, weapons! These are both essential tools for revenge.”
Lauren Harris’s lips twitched slightly as she couldn’t help but say, “Do you know how many zombies there are in the world? Even if you gain superpowers, you can’t kill all the zombies and mutant creatures by yourself.”
“Is that so?” A cold glint flashed in William Carter’s eyes. He clenched his right hand into a tight fist and said, “Then I’ll play a game of conquest—gather all the superpowered people in the world, all the wise and skilled individuals, and together we’ll slaughter the zombies! Those who refuse, kill! Those who resist, kill! Those who cause trouble, kill! If we unite all of humanity, I don’t believe we can’t wipe out the zombies!”
“Should I admire your courage, or laugh at your naivety?” Lauren Harris looked at William Carter, shaking her head with a light chuckle. “Unite all of humanity? Wipe out all the zombies? Do you think you’re the King of Superpowers or something?”
William Carter stared quietly at Lauren Harris for a long time. With a determined look in his eyes, he said word by word, “My brother is dead—he died because of me! I must get revenge! Didn’t you just mention a mission? If I really have a mission after waking up, then it’s to kill all these zombies! If only the King of Superpowers can unite all of humanity, then I will become the King of Superpowers! The King who tramples all other superpowered people underfoot!”
Looking at the man before her, who didn’t wave the so-called banner of saving humanity, who didn’t spout empty talk of righteousness and morality, but instead expressed his thoughts so bluntly—William Carter—Lauren Harris suddenly had a feeling: if there really was someone in this world who could wipe out all the zombies and defeat all the superpowered, it would definitely be this man before her.
Compared to other superpowered people who only sought to dominate a region, this man, who hadn’t even awakened his powers yet, had a far greater ambition. The desire for revenge fueled his fighting spirit, enough to keep him moving forward relentlessly.
“Eat the rest of this chicken.” Lauren Harris smiled as she handed over the half-eaten raw chicken. “The future King of Superpowers can’t starve to death here from lack of strength.”
William Carter took the raw chicken, sliced off a few pieces of meat with his knife, and ate them in big bites. “No matter what, I have to get to Changlecheng first. I will become the King of Superpowers!”
Lauren Harris let out a long sigh, her face looking grim as she gazed at the surrounding weeds. “Even if you’re already a super soldier, it’ll be hard to make it out of this wilderness and reach Changlecheng.”
“Super soldier?” A trace of confusion flashed in William Carter’s eyes. “What’s a super soldier?”
“The last type of computer invented by humans before they lost control of the Earth. Just by standing in front of it, the computer can accurately assess your personal combat power. Currently, all human warriors use this as the evaluation standard. Super soldiers are the elite among warriors.” A mocking smile appeared on Lauren Harris’s face. “The funniest thing is, I’ve heard that even the highly intelligent zombies above the Corpse Whisperer level use computers to select their subordinates and assign ranks.”
“There’s actually such a machine?” William Carter was a bit puzzled.
Lauren Harris continued, “Among super soldiers, the computers divide them into X, S, A, B, C, D, and E levels. Among ordinary people, reaching C level as a super soldier is already extremely rare. As for higher levels, at least I’ve never heard of anyone reaching them.”
“Is that so?” William Carter fell silent for a moment, then asked curiously, “Where can I find such a computer? I want to assess myself.”
“If we’re really lucky, when we pass through the abandoned City 18 where you woke up, maybe we can find such a machine there.” Lauren Harris tried to reassure William Carter, though she knew in her heart that in this environment, making it ten kilometers through the wild in one piece would already be a miracle.
“Got it.” William Carter stopped talking and focused on eating the raw chicken in his hand.
Nights in the wilderness are cold. Even in the hot month of August, sometimes the temperature barely rises above zero.
William Carter and Lauren Harris slept side by side in the tent. The cramped space forced the two strangers’ bodies to press tightly together as they made it through the night.
Chapter 9: Everything for Survival (Part 2)
The morning sun once again brought warmth to the earth. Lauren Harris took the breakfast William Carter had prepared for her and forced herself to finish it despite her nausea.
Their means of transportation, the jeep, had run out of gas during yesterday’s wild escape. If they wanted to reach Changlecheng, hundreds of kilometers away, they would have to rely on their own two legs to get there.
