Chapter 6

“Wait a moment, I’ll go ask for some.” William Carter stood up to leave, but David Clark grabbed William Carter’s wrist and shook his head, saying, “Forget it, they won’t give you any. By the way, you haven’t eaten yet, right? Eat something first.”

William Carter took the “food” and examined it from left to right for a long time, the corners of his mouth twitching slightly. He asked, word by word, “Can you tell me what this is? Isn’t it supposed to be meat from hunting? What is this? What is this! Just some leaves mixed with a bit of cornmeal! Is this even fit for humans to eat?!”

“Keep your voice down, keep your voice down.” David Clark hurriedly grabbed William Carter with both hands and said, “Don’t let them hear you, otherwise…”

“What a pity, we already heard you.” The door of the cabin was kicked open and crashed to the ground. Two shirtless young men, each holding a wooden stick, sneered and said, “Everyone living in this room is trash. I’ve never seen such arrogant trash before. Today, we’ll teach you, the newcomer, some rules.”

“Rules?” William Carter nodded and said, “Yes, it’s time for some rules.”

“Tianhao! Don’t do anything! I asked around, and all of us who woke up have lost our strength. Maybe you don’t know yet…” David Clark panicked, ran in front of William Carter, and knelt down to the young men, kowtowing repeatedly, “Generals, my friend just woke up and doesn’t understand the situation, he…”

“Get up!” William Carter yanked the kneeling David Clark up and shouted, “In our Poison Wolf unit, except for brothers and parents, no one is worthy of us kneeling! I owe you two lives! Two! Two lives I can never repay! If I see them treat you like this and do nothing, am I even human?!”

“You two bastards, get out and wait for me!” William Carter roared, grabbing the only stool in the room, propping up David Clark with his other shoulder, and carrying a fire axe as he walked out the door, saying, “Brother, watch closely. Our Poison Wolf unit has a tradition of vengeance. Even after fifty years of slumber, it still runs in our blood.”

The two young men had never seen anyone so brazen after waking up. They were the first to walk out the door, shouting and cursing in the camp, quickly drawing a crowd of workers.

William Carter supported David Clark as they left the room, placed the stool in front of the cabin wall, and let David Clark sit down so he’d have something to lean on.

The onlookers numbered in the hundreds. An old woman walked up to the two young men and patiently tried to persuade them: “Hunter, Leopard. These people are part of our tribe too, why bully them like this? He’s already so miserable, just let them go.”

The young man called Hunter sneered, “Old woman, without us, you wouldn’t have these peaceful days. Stay out of this and don’t make me angry. These two pieces of trash are fed and housed here, yet they don’t know how to be grateful. If we don’t teach them a lesson, are they going to rebel?”

Many of the young onlookers nodded in agreement, and even quite a few children nodded as well. Only the elderly shook their heads in disapproval.

“That’s right! Son! You’re absolutely right!” a fat woman shouted proudly from the crowd, “Hunter! Teach these pieces of trash a lesson!”

William Carter looked at everyone’s expressions, the cold light in his eyes growing ever stronger.

“Don’t fight! Don’t fight!” Lauren Harris, still wearing that tattered burlap sack, ran into the crowd and shouted, “Leo! Hunter! You’re no match for him! Don’t fight!”

The two young men, riding high on their excitement, showed mocking disbelief on their faces, pointing their sticks at William Carter and saying, “I can’t beat this piece of trash? These people who’ve slept for fifty years—even a teenager could beat them.”

“Oh, really?” William Carter stepped forward, a fierce glint flashing in his eyes.

“You bold piece of trash!” Hunter raised his stick and swung it at William Carter’s head.

“No!” Lauren Harris screamed in alarm.

Everyone thought she was trying to stop Hunter, but they didn’t realize she was actually hoping William Carter wouldn’t make a move.

His sworn brother had been tormented to this state—how could he not take revenge and still call himself a man? William Carter let out a cold laugh, sidestepped the stick with a light movement, spun on his feet to get behind Hunter, and grabbed his head with both hands, twisting it sharply!

Crack.

The sound of breaking bones, which he had long grown numb to, sounded especially pleasant to William Carter for the first time.

He released Hunter’s shoulders, and Hunter collapsed to the ground like a pile of mud. The people around stared in terror at William Carter’s thunderous methods.

A strong young man, in William Carter’s hands, seemed as weak as a baby. In the blink of an eye, the once arrogant man was finished...

“Trash? Now you’re not even as good as trash.” William Carter didn’t even look at the ruined Hunter on the ground, but stared coldly at the stunned Leo: “Any last words? Too bad, I don’t plan to let you say any…”

“Run!” Lauren Harris spread her arms and rushed at William Carter, hoping to hold him back and buy Leo some time to escape.
