Chapter 2

Zombies, when they appear alone, aren’t much of a threat. Any healthy adult can kill one, as long as they aren’t scared by its appearance and know the zombie’s weak points.

Although it was Louis Carter’s first time seeing such a creature in person, he was mentally prepared and knew its weaknesses. So, the second the zombie lunged at Louis Carter, he pierced its skull with a single sword thrust, dropping it cleanly to the ground.

Killing a single zombie wasn’t anything strange. After Louis Carter regained his youthful appearance, his physical condition also returned to its peak. Having lain in a hospital bed for so long, he could hardly remember just how fit he’d been in his youth.

But something even more surprising happened before his eyes. Louis Carter watched in amazement as a tennis ball-sized orb of light rose from the zombie’s body and then flew into the back of his left hand: Endurance increased!

“This is...

Leveling up and gaining attributes from killing monsters?”

Louis Carter had thought he was just a so-called hero in name only, but now it seemed that being a hero was actually his golden cheat.

Turning around, Louis Carter immediately charged at another zombie. With another swift and decisive thrust, he killed it before it could even turn around.

Another orb of light appeared, but it was much smaller. After quickly burrowing into Louis Carter’s left hand, he received another message: Endurance slightly increased!

“...” He took two steps back to put some distance between himself and another zombie that was lunging at him, quickly moved to the side, then rushed forward and stabbed at its head.

The third zombie fell, and a tiny speck of light entered his left hand: Endurance increased by a trace.

“Looks like I can’t become the Sword Saint of Raccoon City after all.”

Louis Carter had thought he could just keep killing monsters to gain attributes and was ready to go on a rampage in Raccoon City, but now it seemed that this kind of reward had its ‘limits.’

Glancing around, he saw there were no more lone zombies nearby. In fact, he’d stayed here a bit too long and attracted more zombies to gather. Louis Carter decided to leave immediately.

Killing a few lone zombies was fine, but if these creatures started swarming in groups and you kept charging forward, that would be suicide.

Although this new life was an unexpected bonus, and he’d gained protagonist perks like transmigration and rebirth, that didn’t mean he should rush headlong into certain death.

He dashed into a shop by the street. He wasn’t worried about being trapped inside—even if there was no back door or emergency exit, couldn’t he just smash a window?

After locking the door behind him, Louis Carter realized that not knowing his way around this completely unfamiliar city was a real problem.

“I need to find a map or something.”

He carefully checked every corner of the room. After making sure there were no zombies hiding inside, Louis Carter searched the shop thoroughly.

Unfortunately, he didn’t find a map, but he did find a Glock 17 pistol in a drawer next to the counter.

“Didn’t expect to find a gun so soon.”

There were also two fully loaded magazines and two boxes of 9mm ammo. Louis Carter put the two boxes of bullets into his backpack.

He also realized that besides weapons, he should get a tactical vest or something similar to carry all the ammo.

It was really inconvenient to keep everything in his backpack, and his current clothes didn’t have any suitable pockets for ammo. So he improvised a cloth pouch, tied it to his waist, and put the magazines inside.

Sheathing his longsword, Louis Carter gripped the newly acquired Glock in his right hand and carefully exited the shop through the back door.

The alley behind the shop was dark and damp. The downside of such paths was that they were narrow and hard to navigate, and could easily get blocked.

The upside was that zombies would have a hard time gathering in large numbers. Even if he was unlucky enough to run into a horde, they could only attack Louis Carter one at a time, giving him a chance to kill them individually.

After weaving through the alley for a while, Louis Carter luckily found a clothing store. He changed into a fresh set of clothes from head to toe, then took out another zombie—this unlucky guy had probably hidden in the shop after getting injured. Although he hadn’t been attacked by zombies again, his wounds had turned him into one of the monsters. Just as he managed to get up, he ran into Louis Carter, who was checking the place, and got his head blown off.

After killing another zombie, Louis Carter received another message: Endurance increased by a trace!

What made him even happier was that this zombie was a police officer, and he had plenty of good stuff on him. In the next second, all those items became Louis Carter’s gear.

A holster, magazine pouch, flashlight—these were all things Louis Carter needed. He even took the handcuffs, though he wasn’t sure if he’d ever use them.

After changing into the new gear and swapping out his backpack, Louis Carter left the clothing store, pondering his next move.

“Raccoon City Police Department?”

Not knowing which version of Raccoon City he was in, Louis Carter figured that as long as he made it to the police station, he’d get his answers.

But here was the problem: Where was the police station?

Just as Louis Carter was getting a headache over this and was about to head back to the main street, loud noises kept coming from the building next door. With a heavy thud, a figure burst out of the door and fell straight to the ground.

The problem that had been troubling Louis Carter a moment ago was instantly solved.
