He recognized the short-haired woman in front of him wearing a blue vest, and her current state also made him realize which version of Raccoon City he was in.
“So this is the Raccoon City where beauty emerges from the water…”
Chapter 2: The Newly Minted Hero Who Diligently Studies the Setting
In the Resident Evil 3 Remake, because of a certain line of dialogue, the new version of Jill Valentine was described as “beauty emerging from the water.”
This beautiful female protagonist was now sitting on the ground, panting as she looked at the emergency exit that had been blocked by rubble. She seemed to have just gone through something terrifying.
Louis Carter knew she had just escaped the relentless pursuit of the Nemesis, but that was only temporary.
The entire story of Resident Evil 3 is about Jill trying every possible way to escape Raccoon City, while the special bioweapon released by Umbrella—the Nemesis—tirelessly chases after Jill, like a suitor obsessed with winning the goddess’s favor, never giving up and always entangling her.
The Jill in front of Louis Carter had just survived her first escape from the Nemesis, but there would be countless more encounters and fierce battles ahead.
“Are you okay?”
Recalling all sorts of details about the Resident Evil 3 Remake in his mind, Louis Carter walked over to Jill, reaching out to help her up from the ground.
When Jill heard footsteps approaching, she turned her head. Seeing Louis Carter speak, she let out a sigh of relief: “I’m fine, thank you for your concern.”
Standing up again, Jill gently moved her body, confirming that she had only suffered some superficial wounds, and at the same time, she sized up Louis Carter beside her.
In Jill’s eyes, Louis Carter was a young man of about twenty, with nothing particularly remarkable about his appearance, but in this environment where everyone was panicking and running around, Louis Carter seemed far too calm.
“My name is Jill, and you are…?”
“Louis Carter.”
Louis Carter didn’t say much. He had just given his name when a man wearing a yellow police vest appeared at the entrance of the alley.
“Jill, are you alright?”
Hearing the shout, Jill turned her head, and when she saw who it was, she raised her hand to signal she was fine: “Bradley Harris, what the hell was that thing?”
“Let’s get out of here first!”
Bradley Harris motioned for Jill to leave the alley.
Jill turned to glance at Louis Carter: “Do you want to come with us?”
“It’s just as well—I don’t really know where I should go, and I’ve only just arrived in Raccoon City, so I’m not familiar with the streets here.”
Louis Carter had been in Raccoon City for less than two hours and didn’t know his way around at all. Following Jill was a good choice.
As the two spoke, they walked out of the alley, and Bradley Harris overheard the conversation between Louis Carter and Jill: “I’m Bradley Harris, welcome to Raccoon City.”
With the panicked citizens running all around, the flickering firelight and streetlights, and the constant sounds of gunfire and explosions, Bradley Harris’s welcome sounded especially sarcastic.
“What exactly is going on?”
Jill interrupted Bradley Harris’s welcome; she wanted to know what was really happening: “Why has it become like this?”
The remake version of Jill, after experiencing the mansion incident in the Arklay Mountains, hadn’t been doing well at all—she even needed medication to fall asleep.
It was precisely because of the medication that she was completely unaware when the zombie virus first broke out. By the time she woke up, the whole city had already descended into chaos.
She didn’t even know what had happened when she first woke up, and the Nemesis had already come to her home. When Louis Carter met Jill, she had just escaped the Nemesis’s first attempt on her life.
“I don’t know what’s going on either. As for that monster…
All I know is that he’s very interested in the only two STARS members left in the city.”
Bradley Harris didn’t know much either. Although at the start of the story he called Jill to warn her to run, he was just a little too late: “I really don’t want to run into that thing again.”
Bradley Harris also reminded Jill to look around—the situation was already terrible, and they’d better leave quickly: “The longer we wait, the worse it’ll get.”
As they spoke, the three of them made their way through the streets.
The main street was in chaos, with all kinds of vehicles parked haphazardly. Occasionally, a helicopter would fly overhead. Bradley Harris jumped and tried to warn the people in the helicopter to look out below, but it was no use.
Louis Carter didn’t pay attention to Bradley Harris and Jill; his gaze kept sweeping over the vehicles around them: he didn’t see any police cars, so for now he couldn’t get any more equipment.
He was also calculating in his mind what he should do next.
He had already figured out which version of Raccoon City he was in and could recall most of the plot.
Although he had never actually played this game in his previous life, as a happy “cloud gamer,” he had watched several playthrough videos.
By sticking with Jill, he didn’t have to worry about not finding a way out of Raccoon City. Jill’s goal and Louis Carter’s mission were the same: to leave this city.
