Chapter 9

Two grenades, an M4A1 carbine, and ten magazines. Because of Louis Carter's special request, Carl went to get him another one with a grenade launcher attached, and additionally asked for twelve grenades (exactly two belts), six high-explosive fragmentation grenades and six incendiary grenades.

After carefully asking about how to use them and practicing once with an empty chamber, Louis Carter finally loaded the magazines.

Although it couldn't be called "armed to the teeth," it was still much better than when he first arrived here, and Louis Carter could feel the effects of those attribute rewards.

"The old me wouldn't have found this gear so easy to wear."

Chapter 5: Stunningly Beautiful

In his previous life, Louis Carter's body was at its best during his school years. When he was young, he was thin, quick to react, and had great explosive power. During school sports meets, he would participate in the 100 meters, 400 meters, and 100-meter relay events.

But at that young age, his strength wasn't great, and his endurance was average. Later, after starting work, he kept up with fitness for a while and managed to improve his physical fitness, but by then his reaction speed and explosive power had noticeably declined—he could feel it himself.

After gaining a new life, Louis Carter's appearance returned to his youthful state. He was worried that his endurance and strength wouldn't be enough, but the consecutive rewards he received filled in the gaps in his physical abilities.

With a whole load of weapons and ammunition hanging on him, he didn't feel strained at all, nor did he have any trouble moving: "I wonder how much my stamina has improved...

I'd better kill a few more types of monsters while I still have plenty of energy."

Once he was fully equipped, Louis Carter glanced at Jill beside him. She and Bradley Harris had already stopped arguing. As someone with a strong sense of justice and responsibility, Jill could never just sit by and ignore a group of survivors trapped here. After persuading Bradley Harris, she also asked Michael for some weapons.

With only a handgun, even someone like Jill with experience fighting zombies couldn't move freely in Raccoon City as it was now.

Jill didn't ask for a tactical vest, but her belt was loaded with pouches and magazine holders, and she wore a bandolier slung across her body, filled with shotgun shells. Besides the handgun in her holster, she specifically asked for a shotgun as well.

"Are you really coming with me?"

Jill knew Louis Carter was an "outsider" and didn't know the way around. If he wanted to help, he'd have to act together with her.

"Of course!"

Louis Carter switched his weapon to semi-auto, choosing single shots to control ammo consumption. "Rather than relying on others, I'd rather rely on myself."

"Hope you won't regret it."

"I won't regret it!"

Of course Louis Carter wouldn't regret it. Only by going out to kill monsters and earn rewards could he get stronger, and whether he could get stronger would affect his life after leaving here. In this situation, hiding here waiting for the protagonist to save him would be the height of stupidity.

"Hey, Jill!"

Seeing that Jill and Louis Carter were ready to head out, Carl handed over a walkie-talkie. "Keep in touch!"

After taking the walkie-talkie, Jill and Louis Carter turned and set off.

Bradley Harris didn't go with them. He would stay at the subway station with Carl and the others to clear the subway tracks. Otherwise, even if the power was restored, the subway couldn't run.

Leaving the platform by another route and returning to the street, they could still see ordinary citizens fleeing everywhere, but there were far fewer than before.

"There are a lot fewer people now!"

Louis Carter looked around. Compared to when he first arrived, when the streets were full of panicked citizens, now there were only a few scattered people, and more of them had already mutated into zombies.

"We need to get the subway running as soon as possible."

Jill glanced around, confirmed her position, and signaled to Louis Carter: "Follow me, the substation is this way."

"This road doesn't look so easy to take!"

Louis Carter gripped the M4A1 in one hand and swung his sword with the other, cutting down any lone zombies. The increase in strength was obvious—not only could he carry weapons more easily, but killing zombies with a sword was much easier too.

He certainly hadn't found it this easy before. With a clear standard for comparison, he now had a much better sense of his own improvement.

"The main road is blocked. We'll have to take a detour!"

Various vehicles and obstacles had turned the whole street into a broken mess. Some could be climbed over or crossed, but most had to be bypassed.

Fortunately, as a Raccoon City police officer, Jill knew the city streets like the back of her hand. She knew exactly where they could get around.

Following Jill, Louis Carter didn't have to worry about getting lost. He just needed to stay behind her and help cover the rear when necessary.

"Should we watch out above?"

Louis Carter's question made Jill pause for a moment. Then, as Louis Carter pointed with his left hand, holding the sword upside down, at the walls on either side, she realized that in these alleyways, the sides of the tall buildings didn't seem to pose a threat.

But that was under normal circumstances. Things were far from normal now.

When facing bio-organic monsters, common sense could get you killed, because many mutated creatures could move on vertical walls.

"Keep an eye out. I don't know if there are any monsters that can move on the walls."
