But moving together with Jill carries enormous risks. The countless zombies are not even the main problem—the real threat is that nearly unkillable pursuer, who won’t ignore Louis Carter just because he isn’t a STARS member. That monster will destroy anything that appears in its path.
In the story, aside from the male protagonist Carl Oliver, everyone else who has interacted with Jill ends up dead, including Bradley Harris, who is currently walking ahead.
“Bradley Harris, watch out!”
A large number of zombies began to gather. The temporary iron fence on the road could no longer hold back so many zombies. The horde broke through the barrier and was closing in. Seeing that the road was blocked, Bradley Harris immediately dashed into a nearby bar.
“This way!”
Jill and Louis Carter didn’t hesitate and followed right after. Once inside the bar, Bradley Harris braced the door, signaling for Jill and Louis Carter to leave through the back door.
At that moment, the surging horde of zombies began slamming into the door. There was no way Bradley Harris could hold it alone. As soon as the zombies broke through, they lunged at Bradley Harris with open mouths.
Just as Bradley Harris was about to be bitten, Louis Carter’s longsword stabbed into the zombie’s head first. As he withdrew the sword, he grabbed Bradley Harris by the collar and pulled him back.
After rescuing Bradley Harris, he switched the longsword to his left hand, drew the recently acquired Glock pistol with his right, and fired wildly at the zombies in front of him.
The crisp sound of gunfire rang out continuously. Although Louis Carter had never handled a gun in his previous life, the Glock is a very user-friendly weapon—just aim and pull the trigger, no need to worry about the safety or anything like that.
At such close range, Louis Carter wasn’t worried about missing. After taking down four zombies in a row, the now steady Bradley Harris patted Louis Carter on the shoulder: “Now’s our chance, run!”
Louis Carter hadn’t taken down many zombies, but the fallen ones effectively blocked the others from advancing. The zombies that tripped kept crawling stubbornly toward Louis Carter, but much more slowly, giving him plenty of time to escape.
With his left hand, he reversed his grip and stabbed a crawling zombie in front of him, then quickly turned and ran with Bradley Harris toward the back door.
Jill was waiting by the door, waving them over. Once Bradley Harris and Louis Carter had both made it out, Jill immediately shut the door.
Once outside, Louis Carter piled up all sorts of debris and trash by the door. Even if it couldn’t hold the zombies back completely, it would at least buy them more time.
But the situation wasn’t that urgent. After the door was shut, the zombies didn’t immediately follow, and since the alley was relatively safe, they could catch their breath for a moment.
“Thank you!”
Bradley Harris thanked Louis Carter. He wasn’t just some clueless civilian—being a STARS member, Bradley Harris was a survivor of the mansion incident (the plot of Resident Evil 1) and knew exactly what would happen if those monsters bit you.
“No need to thank me.”
Jill walked over to a police officer’s corpse not far ahead and picked up the officer’s handgun. “Bradley Harris, do you have a weapon on you?”
“No.”
Bradley Harris shook his head. He had escaped in a hurry and hadn’t brought any weapons. “But that’s not really a problem.”
After the virus outbreak, battles had erupted in every corner of Raccoon City. Police officers and Umbrella’s mercenaries were everywhere, and so were their corpses and weapons.
“Let’s get out of here first!”
By now, the zombies in the bar had started slamming into the door. If Louis Carter hadn’t blocked the entrance with debris, the zombies would have already burst out.
“This way!”
Jill gathered all the bullets she could find. Having a weapon in hand gave her a bit more confidence. As for which way to go, they didn’t have many options—there was only one path ahead.
The main road was completely blocked. The three of them squeezed through the only remaining gap for less than ten meters before they could go no further.
They had no choice but to enter a nearby warehouse, hoping to find another exit that would lead to a different street.
At this moment, a helicopter overhead spotted the three of them and directed them to head to the rooftop of the parking garage.
“The parking garage rooftop—is it far from here?”
As Louis Carter asked, he cut down a zombie that had lunged out of a car window. This kind of thing happened from time to time along the way, but this time was a bit different: there was no notification!
He paused for a moment, then carefully counted the number of zombies he had killed, finally coming to a conclusion: the first one gave the most; the second, a significant drop; starting from the third, only a tiny increase; by the eleventh, there was no reward at all.
The rewards for killing monsters were even less than he’d initially expected!
Jill had no idea what was going through Louis Carter’s mind and simply answered his casual question: “Not far. As long as the way isn’t blocked, we can get to the parking garage by going through this warehouse.”
But what Louis Carter was really thinking was: besides zombies, do other monsters give rewards?
The Resident Evil story features all kinds of monsters.
He didn’t know whether the rewards for killing monsters were calculated separately by monster type, or if all the monsters in the world were counted together.
